Dealers do that all of the time when they disagree with a grade. That wasn't the major issue some had with what he did. Jarett relisted the coin after cracking it out and in the title of the auction he called the coin "Gem." To most collectors that have been around awhile, the word "Gem" is synonymous with uncirculated, or more specifically the grade of MS65. So he took a lot of heat for cracking out an AU58 coin and selling it as an MS65.

I too live in SoCal and see him around all of the time at shows and shops. I've also had conversations with him about that 3-legger incident. Remember, at that time he was a rookie in the coin business. He claims (and I believe him) that he was just using the word "gem" in the title as an adjective to describe it as being a nice coin (which it was). The same way that others would call a coin PQ. He insists that he didn't realize that saying "gem" would be equal to saying "MS65" to many in the business. Makes sense that a rookie in the business might not know that.

Others disagreed with his reasons for cracking the coin in the first place, to attempt to remove a faint fingerprint on the coin after NCS already failed to do so to his liking. Again, at this time he was working at a local coin shop who taught him various conservation techniques (some more market acceptable than others) and figured he could work the same magic on his 3-legger to get rid of that print. Well it didn't work out as he planned and maybe he got a little more aggressive with the "conservation" than some others would have done. Again, seems like a rookie mistake. The 3-legger didn't get pulled, it was sold via auction on eBay.

It's real easy to beat up on him and many seem to have a little too much fun with it. Especially since everyone knows he's banned and can't really defend himself. Don't get me wrong, I definitely don't give him a pass for all of his actions on and off of the forums, but it's clear he has grown quite a bit in this business over the past few years and has dealt with some very impressive coins. Give the guy a break, that MS69 Morgan Dollar is awesome. I saw it in hand and it's even better than his photos/videos and I agree that it deserves a PL designation.
