I'd throw the cards back in the deck - this game won't end. Take Chinese-made products, for example.. Wal-Mart sells thousands of different products that were made in China, but the idea of buying something online directly from China for a lower price seems ludicrous simply because it's not 'Americanized'. "Intent" has a subjective price tag.
I'm changing the subject a bit, but how do you explain the insane prices being paid for toned morgans? look at this auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370412598070&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
His coins always demand a high price for some reason, I bought one that I am still waiting for. Its a very nice coin and was at a very small premium IMHO
I bought 2 coins from him about 6 months ago: very nice ms64 rainbow toned and paid about $100 each. Lately, people are laying down unbelievable bids.... like $800 for a $60+ coin. the prices on toned coins have become totally out of control. can't figure why the sudden jump?
The prices for rainbow toned coins are not increasing. They have been driving premiums like that for years. Wanna guess how much I paid for this coin in the summer of 2007? How long have you been monitoring the toned coin market? Chances are that your $100 rainbow toned Morgans were simple crescent toners like this: Not coins with dramatic rainbow toning that completely covers on side of the coin like this $800 coin: Having said that, I don't like the coin that you posted a link to and would not pay anywhere near that price for it.
I found 1 of the coins I bought from that dealer. MS63 paid $88 about 8 months ago. since then I've been into toned coins. only have a few cause I'm still learning about real toning. So now to ur coin. MS64...$60, add toning and the star.... I really have no idea so I'll guess in 2007 u paid $200. today on ebay could be $400? jim
Take your guess and multiply it by 7. If I sold it today, I would certainly lose money. But then again, I knew that when I bought it in a retail situation. Like I said, the premiums have been there for a long time, you are just now discovering them. The premium related to the toning is based on the eye appeal of the coin in question. Your coin above has slightly mottled, somewhat dark, and not terribly vibrant toning. While the toning is attractive, it simply does not compare to that of my 1883-O. Please read this thread, it will help you! Rainbow Toning's Effect on Price
Lehigh96, I disagree that you would lose money if you sold today, the toned market is hot and I see many similar coins going for 4 digits lately. The only real drawback is the toning is on the reverse which drops the value a bit but it's got some sweet color. Check the completed auction prices on teletrade, very strong for "monster" morgans.
Someone must have really wanted that Morgan. One of my dealers has an NGC slabbed, MS-64 1885-O for $70.
If Ebay is that God Awful to buy Coins..Why is every one still going back there for..The Circus said there is a sucker born every moment i guess ..me included..Ebay doesn't care..they know the odds of complaints are at a very minimal..They want the free money for posting the Junk..
People will find a way go make money on the Bay. If you want to avoid AT coins and getting ripped then buy certified toned coins. I know of a guy who buys problem coins (he thinks are a bargain) off Teletrade for instance, cracks them out of the slabs and puts them in 2 x 2's and sells them raw. The people who buy these want them for their albums. He recently sold a such coin for $3400 at a show he got off TTR for $800. Your only protection agains all this is to buy certified coins.
