    I don't collect coins...but I have accumulated quite a few.

I use numismatic material to better understand the period of history I am studying. In the last few years, my studies have mostly focused on the early 1700s England / Britain. I enjoy putting numismatic material in both historical and social context.

If I present an inexpensive farthing from the mid-1700s, I get no feedback...except for some grief from "experts" about the lack of quality of the coin or snide remarks like "mine is better," "mine is bigger," or "mine in shinier."

If I present an equally inexpensive Alexandrian tetradrachm, the response I get is both educational and overwhelmingly positive:

    TrajanTETNo.jpg TrajanTETNr.jpg

I feel that both these coins that I posted are so rich in history and meaning. But guess what type of coins I prefer to post?

So join us in the dark side:

I may have given a couple of infractions to the ancient dwellers when they first arrived at our gates due to some old habits of theirs, but I have said before and repeat, they patrol themselves very well and only occasionally break out into the old tongue. As a group they are great guests. Of course their politics is really history, and the religions rather old school, so they do have less to become a ranter.

Okay, I'll give my feedback on the farthing. I think it's got serious eye appeal and I don't have any 18th century coppers that are better, bigger or shinier.

But politeness doesn't pay on the modern side. Why? The difference in social attitudes especially. Speak your mind and don't correct me. The ancients collectors sort of under stand that, and avoid it at the same time. I think they are a very good asset to the site. I'll even bet their longevity as better CT members are greater than ours.

It may well exist in other areas, but I wouldn't know, the ancient sections is the only section I've posted asking what I had. So, never have had several half price offers in other areas.

Modern coins, which I would call post 1950 stuff (the approximate date when world coin producers began to go mad with non circulating issues) are so inherently boring that the only appeal seems to be details so trivial that normal folk simply do not notice them or care about them.

This frustrates the modern collectors, and causes aberrant behaviour not dissimilar to overcrowded rats or chickens.

The cure is to let them free to range more widely, but like the animals they become so cage conditioned that they will not roam free for fear of the dreaded 'raw' coin, so often found in the wild.

The coins I collect are mostly the ones that you consider boring and trivial. ;) Don't have any problems with that. But why should I talk about, say, the project of a €5 collector coin with a built-in blue polymer ring if the reaction will be "meh, euro" or "meh, modern"? It's the old question - do you write about something, hoping that one fine day you attract people who are interested, or do you look at what existing members are interested in ... The ancient folks here actually managed to do both, bring new members and topics. And I do not see anything wrong with that, although I do not collect ancients.

Hey, "modern" and "US" guys (and gals), I just saw this thread at the moment (I have to confess going to the coin chat, US coin forum or World coin forum from time to time only). You all (almost all) seem a bit jealous of what you see on the ancient coin forum. Come on guys, you're very welcome there. It's a nice community, people like to show their coins, see what other people have, learn and teach, and even more, take it easy and have fun, not taking it too seriously, because it's just a hobby

    Welcome to all !

    :)

I guess you need to be educated to collect ancients, while anybody can hoard modern coins or bullion (preferably in MS70 slabs LOL) If you cannot even read Latin or Greek just forget about ancients ;-)

People talking about ancient coins really seem to care about the coin, while others just want to make a steal or some quick money.... what's its value? any premium? I don't like to discuss prices anymore because it seems everybody else is paying much less than I do...

Unlike U.S. coins and post 1600 world coins, researching ancients cannot be done easily in digitally available references. Rather, it depends on polite requests on forums like Worldofcoins.eu where world experts share their wealth of knowledge. Traditionally, collecting coins was a refined hobby for intelligent patient individuals. Unfortunately, it seems to have become infiltrated with people trying to make a fast buck. But what endeavour hasn't?
