So what are your takes on this coin ? What's right with it , what's wrong ? Do you think it has a good chance of being real ? Tough questions I know but I'm glad you posted .

It looks genuine and cleaned to me, but I have bought 3 counterfeit trade dollars over the past 5 years. It's just a matter of risk/reward, & how much anxiety you can handle while you judge it, or send it to a TPG, or wonder if the seller/eBay will bail you out in case it's no good.
Personally, I lose sleep over this stuff when it's me, so I avoid when it gets this expensive.

Questionable, yes... the photos were clearly cropped too small, but based on what can be seen, does anyone care to share their opinions on this? If real or fake, please explain why, and for the one gentleman in particular, should the seller be reported?

Thanks for the Link , but most of us who participated in the last few Trade dollar threads have read this great thread by ksparrow . You must remember the leaps in quality the Chinese have made in their best fakes and though these things still apply they don't go far enough for the newest coin silver fakes . I think Books B4Coins was looking for opinions on the coin in post #63 . I'm still trying to find some information on '78-CC TDs in general as to what sub types they have . At 1st take I think it's ok and needs further investigation . But one thing that bothers me is the eagles eye . It appears as a round hole , where most real TDs the eye is more 1/2 closed . But I wonder if this is from wear .

I read it last fall. I've only been collecting and reading since last summer, and therefore am not quite confident to offer anything other than an informative link. However you've inspired me to make a go at pointing out a couple of things that don't seem right. So I'm gonna give it a shot.
For a type 2 which was the only obverse used in 1878. According to the link anyway.

    1. The eye jumps out at me as well. Looks like a simple pin hole.

The eagle's mouth on a genuine coin is open all the way back where the jaw hinge, or beak hinge might be, directly under the eye. There is a good pic of this on the link. So...

    2. The picture on this thread shows the mouth (beak) closed about halfway back (a simple line) to where it ends under the eye.

    That's all I have. :)

Thanks for joining the discussion, Grey. While not holding my breath, hopefully some of the other guys will chime in. This is a worthwhile subject, so the more the merrier.
