I never thought of putting a set together of anything. when I can get the money allocated to it. a set of kennedy halves would be nice.

Never underestimate the power of yellow metal to draw you back to collecting! lol

Actually, I am having a tough time finding things I like that I can afford, as it seems my tastes have changed with time and the more coins I see.

I do consider myself a collector primarily, though.

There is just too much history regarding coinage. Most history professors I know (which really aren't that many) don't even have as much historical research behind them as many numismatists. the only thing I am truly collecting at the moment is my world birthyear set. As to any other coin, I buy and sell to see the wide variety of, not only types, but conditions of coinage (including counterfeits) to study the history of the piece, as well as the different ways of manufacturing (and the errors that may occur).

Yes, there is money to be made in buying and selling coins, which I believe every one of us has/will do at some point in our endeavors, and there really is nothing wrong with the investors, because even some of them enjoy their niche in collecting.

And even collectors will have investor attitudes, especially with higher valued items. I mean, you wouldn't just leave your $90,000 Porsche sitting unlocked with the keys in it while dining at a restaurant, would you? Even though you may not look at it as an investment, certain "protections" are sometimes needed.

I'm a collector who likes to buy gold coins for I love gold coins and for the thought that at least the bullion value is an investment and over time may offset what I actually paid for the coin under the collector value.

I am a collvestor that only buys and never sells. I have only been collecting for seven years now but my tackle boxes of coins of slabbed and US mint sold coins already weigh over 20 pounds. I keep watching the auctions and coins are going up pretty good even from only two years ago. Most out pacing any other investment, percentage wise. How long will the bubble last?

I donno, but I welcome a cool off (huge dip/drop)...

I think a lot of weaker hands would start selling off and it might create some decent buying opps for alot of stuff; including stuff I normally would not be able to afford otherwise...

I've always wanted to start a few series of Gold coins... G.A.E.s, Indian heads, Buffalos, etc...

Since I buy as a collecter 1st, it doesn't bother me as much... When looking at it as an investment, I think its values run in cycles and think it will ultimatly go back up... There is only so much Gold and Silver in the ground and on top and its not like they can really make a 1903 or other date again... Not and be legit.. :)

I'm certainly a collector, the more old-fashioned sort, with a nice little CABINET with TRAYS. I don't buy anything if it is slabbed, I don't care if I buy a roman coin and it turns out to be a contempory (or becker) fake (unless I paid more than $100 for it). I collect everything from the 5th century BC to russian coins of Nicholas II.

I have lots of worn, cleaned, stained coins, but if a coin is actually very badly stained I wouldn't buy it.

I have a big box full of flat 19th century pennies !

You are certainly right smullen, if you are investing. You try to market trend just like the stock market. I for one would not like to see a huge sell off and not even a minor one but we all know there must be a correction in sight. I bought a slabbed penny at auction yesterday that I could have had for one third the price only three years ago. I like slabs because they offer a guarantee, albiet a small one. Plus I think it sort of frames the coin and keeps if away from the atmosphere. I hate coins that are graded high but one side is dirty looking and the other side is shiny, like it has been kept in a Dansco album.

Still relatively cheap to do right now... go for it!

I've managed to complete a set of Kennedy business strikes pretty easily, just keeping up with the new ones minted every year for as long as they feel like continuing to make them.

Only collect. Never sold a coin in over 60 years. Gave a lot away though. Not picky. I'll even collect cleaned coins.

I'm with you guys. Just don't forget, this is a hobby. When you do, that's when the trouble starts, that's when you start making sounds like you're clueless...
