I am....the Twin Ports Coin & Currency Club, in Duluth Minnesota. Been involved from just about its inception 12 years ago. Very tough going the last few years with dwindling membership and no new younger members. But we host an annual show every year, and the monthly fellowship and discussions are good. I encourage folks to find a local club and help support it.
I'm a member of my local club but agree with almost everything you said. Most of the other members are very old and mostly interested in areas that don't interest me. Also , I've been playing soccer Tuesday nights and the club meets the first Tuesday of the month. Hard to ditch the guys that are committed to every week for the guys who meet once a month.
Thanks but it's a bit out of the way for Rockville MD. I'll keep my eyes out in January I might make one somewhere.
I'd really like to join a club. The problem is time. I have so many interests and such little time. That's why I've really taken an interest in forums such as this. I know it's not a replacement for true social interaction but it's a close second compared to nothing at all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'll be the first. It's crazy what you can learn when you get away from the floor and the noise. My feet need to rest sometimes and outside turns into it's own coin show.
We just ended our weekend coin shop today and it was a great success. We have a YN section of the club and their exhibit was outstanding and they scored pretty well from most of the dealers who were impressed with the number of members of the YN . Most of the dealers gave the YNs free coins and answered any of the questions they asked them. My grandson came with me and I think he would up with more coins than I did. He's on Lincoln's left.
What are your thoughts? My last coin club seemed only to focus on the auction at the end of the meeting vs befriending others and advancing numismatics.
At my coin club we have a business meeting, then an educational portion related to numismatics. Last month our Perez who is a dealer brought several slabbed coins and we went over whether or not they should have been slabbed. Afterwards we have a lite lunch.
It's a good question. These meetings are formally mostly auction compared to others, but that's because the club is so big, the auction takes a long time to go through. Many collectors and dealers are there and are friendly, and some meetings outside of the normal schedule are social only. Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
I did join my local coin club, but I've only shown up two or three times in the past year. Sometimes the topics are extremely interesting, sometimes not. Plus, I've had a hard time actually meeting people at the club. It seems to have many solid cliques and a few strong personalities dominate. Plus, I do like some non-standard and funky things, so perhaps my tastes are the problem and no one knows what to say to me? Like many people have said about their own clubs, this one also mostly consists of retired men. There are at least one or two women who have attended, but the group in general seems on the upper end of the life experience scale.
True, but although some may be grumpy due to aches and pains and eye going bad, this is also the group with more time and coin examples to be able to help newcomers to the hobby. Someday I hope to be in that group
