A force? Na.. Am I known in the coin circle, yea I guess, I have Heritage, Superior and The Contursi gang calling about a few things I have hanging around. When I go to local shows most of the dealers know who I am. I think everyone in CT is a force to be honest. Everyone has a contribution and that to me is "the force". Minor or Major makes no difference. When I think of BHD's Ben comes to mind., Ancient Gold, GD or Spock, Lincolns, AJ. error coins we have Mike Diamond and good ole Frank just to mention a few. Classic Coins, look no farther than Mark Feld. and the list can go on.... We all are a force and we all have our moments.

Great subject Ben and thanks for making me think about this a little.

Would anyone ever want to know half about coins as GD?
Have a better reputation than Budgood?
Or be as humble as Speedy?
I would like to mention our local comedian Phoenix but....

I think we all can and do contribute. Let the Force be with us..

To some newbies I'm a force , because I'll give all I can for them , of course compared to most , I'm not , but thats whats nice about this forum , everybody can help each other out so we're all learning quite a bit , so maybe in a couple of years I can be a force to people who are like me now .

Ya know, I thought about this a little more. I think two things work against me being a "force" :
    1. I really don't aspire to being a force
    2. I'm a type collector
As far as the 2nd one... I haven't specialized. I'm interested in ALL the US series. I've studied several more closely (Indian gold, early copper, S$1 1794-1935), but even those three areas alone cover a LOT of territory.

It's like Good Science - always an advancing frontier. The more I learn, the more I realize how much there is to know. It can be humbling, but I don't let it discourage me.

And books can be hard to find and expensive !

I think #1 above hits it on the head for me, I have never aspired to be known as a 'force'. I find it interesting but in the end, even though I spend a lot of time on it, its just a hobby and I have never looked for it to be anything else but that.

I dont look at it as a way to make money or gain recognition. I have other things that interest me to the point where I would like to be a 'force' or to be known as top in my field...In fact, oddly enough, I am not interested in a lot of aspects of the hobby of collecting. I am just interested in hording coins.

I dont care about grading and nitpicking the condition of the coin (I care about eye appeal and interesting subject only), I dont care to be a part of a club, I dont care about attracting new collectors to the hobby (why? less coins for me!!), dont want to buy books about coins save useful compendiums, I dont care who is considered a 'force' in the hobby, I dont care for a lot of the new conventions having to do with how one should approach collecting this decade, the absurd advice I sometimes see from so called 'knowledgeable' collectors when it comes to things like cleaning, I dont care to sell or flip, I dont care for anything that might raise the price of a coin or someone who looks to do this, the list just goes on and on. The only real aspects of the hobby I care about are amassing lovely coins with great eye appeal (how they look under an electron microscope I couldnt care less), caring for them, making my coins available to see, seeing the coins of others, seeing new coin types I have never seen before, learning about who is on the coin, the country, sharing my coins and information with others freely and helping someone who is frustrated when I can, the process of attribution, the photography, the history.

In the end I dont care if a single person knows my name and equates it with coins...its purely a hobby driven by a real passion for tiny art on metal discs. :)

Hahahahaha! That must be contagious. I did exactly the same thing, except I bought a new Braided Hair Cent instead. :D

I'm not a force in any area by any means, but I know I can come here looking for answers when I have questions. And I'm pretty sure someone here will know a definite answer.

I feel I should also say that although most of the people here I only have seen here, I wouldnt know them from adam, I dont recognize them (mainly because most use a handle and not a real name) from any books, periodicals, or on a list of top experts, etc...No one as well known of an expert in the field like say...David Sears who pretty much wrote the book on ancients..literally.

I would say that Cointalk as a forum is a real force in collecting....I see it making a difference on a daily basis along with a few other forums where collectors gather.

No one, from what I can tell is what I would call an authority but more collectors who know one (or a few) areas well...when you get a lot of collectors like this together in one place...that is a force.

well, put. I think that Coin Talk IS a force in collecting, and each of us by merit of being contributors are a part (however small) of that force. Wow! I feel so much better about myself in regard to this thread now! ;)

You're welcome Chris, the confidence that people have in you is well deserved ;)

I have been thinking for several days now about how to answer this question. But to answer it I think you must first consider how you would like to define the term - a force in coin collecting.

Some might think of term as meaning somebody that has a definitive impact on the hobby. Using it that way, I would think of people like David Bowers, Dave Lange, Douglas Winter, Ken Bressett and a whole lot of others. These people are definite forces in coin collecting.

But there is another way to have an impact on the hobby of coin collecting - by helping people. Think about it, if you help just one person to learn something you have had a definitive impact on the hobby. No, it may not be as large an impact as that made by David Bowers - but it was an impact just the same.

So just about everybody here is a force in coin collecting, and Lord though it pains me to do so I must even include spock in that

But of all the people here there is one that has helped more others than all of us - Peter. For by making this site available, he has helped thousands and will continue to do so for years.

Nah, I just consider myself a collector who was very fortunate to get into the coin business. The one priviledge that I do have is to deal with individuals nearly every day who are definitely forces in coin collecting.

I think that everyone has something to contribute to collecting and something to learn from someone else.

Not sure this is exactly what the post is referring to but yesterday I was in the bank and ask one of the tellers if they had any of the presidential dollars rolls. They actually did have a few rolls but, as the teller explained, no one really wanted them. This teller said she did not want to handle them since the "IN God We Trust" was hidden on the the side. I explained to her next year they are suppose to put the motto in a more obvious place. This seemed to make her happy.

So maybe I am a tiny tiny force or maybe a micro force. I do have my moments

I do not consider my self a force ,but Thanks to those who have mentioned my name ......Or put me in "the collective group";)

When it is your job day in & day out you gain more than you can imagine in a short time. There will always be more to learn & that is the best part to me.

There was a day when I asked this board about my move into professional numismatics & had a few conversations with Doug & Satootoko about it.
Im greatfull every day that I did decide to take the path Im on.

I dont always give my opinion or advice on coins & notes here but would be more than happy to help anyone with questions.
Most dont know but I am an avid collector of Capped Bust Halves & US Patterns. I also enjoy attributing Large cents . In addition I have been a paper money collector & enjoy Large size notes. So please ask away if you need any info-

As Jack said I do ,do ALOT of "numismatisting" every day & see more coins a day than most - I have an extensive library & I catalog & describe over 500 major coins a month & deal with thousands of what I consider commom coins.

While I still consider myself a noob in the hobby .I have made great strides & Im not going to name drop but I do hob nob with some of the great graders out there .
Its hard not to come to work with a smile when you do it every day & wake up with coins on your brain:smile

    Take it easy-J

@bama guy: So that teller gives out coin rolls depending on whether she likes them or not, or whether they are religious enough for her or not? Strange concept.

"You want a roll of dimes, Sir? Well, you know, I don't really think Roosevelt was a great president, so -- no, I don't have any."

    :D
