I like what RaceBannon said. I'd differentiate an accumulator as someone who just buys coins even if they don't need it for any set or whatever. You already have 10 examples of that coin, but you see another one and buy it and hold onto it. A collector has a goal in mind, or at least a method to his or her madness. When I first started I was more of an accumulator. I was so charmed by the idea of having an old piece of metal with a date on it that I'd buy anything that was older than 1930 or so. Now I have begun to focus on completing sets or getting coins I don't have yet, and I sell my duplicates to get money to buy coins I don't have. I still buy duplicates if it's a good deal, but with the intention of reselling them. It's an evolution from accumulator to collector for me.
I am guilty of both, I have certain coins that I "collect" and have many that I accumulate. As an example I am working on a 20th century type set all PCGS slabbed as well as a short set of BU buffalo's, I would say I collect those. On the other hand I have accumulated 38 1995 DDO lincolns, all have been slabbed and range from ms63 brown to ms68 red. It started with three, one for each child. I had to add another when my daughter was born 12 years ago. I figured since I had one for each kid, I needed one. That made 5. I ran across another one cheap, that made 6. I thought Hmmm maybe I need 10 just to have a round number. So 10 it was, that is until numbers 11-38 showed up. So like I said I fall into both catagories. I think I need coin therapy.
I am an accumulator but trying to collect on the side , verging on hoarder of coins I am in no way in this hobby for the investment. Sorry double post
It's not a question of giving them credit at all. I am merely reporting what actually happened. Go read it yourself.
