This seller has several with similar patterns. Artificial or natural? I know one of his sold listings I had posted earlier and people commented artificial. But I am curious if the rest are artificial too? https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338461489&mpre=https://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-S-VF-Peace-Silver-Dollar-2-LOTS-OF-RAINBOW-TONING/382960301969?hash=item592a367791:g:SXAAAOSwM5Fc4OAq https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338461489&mpre=https://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-S-FINE-Peace-Silver-Dollar-3-A-little-toning-near-rim/382960294220?hash=item592a36594c:g:OfgAAOSw0ilc4N-L https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338461489&mpre=https://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-D-XF-Peace-Silver-Dollar-2-A-LITTLE-RAINBOW-TONING/382960292088?hash=item592a3650f8:g:RnUAAOSwkktc4N4z https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338461489&mpre=https://www.ebay.com/itm/1923-D-VF-Peace-Silver-Dollar-2-A-LITTLE-RAINBOW-TONING/233231821940?hash=item364db32c74:g:u9wAAOSwOgFc4N2~
I don't know whether the coins were toned on purpose or by accident, but they aren't "market acceptable". If you like them, buy them, but don't expect them to bring a premium when you try to sell them. (I'd also say "don't expect them to grade cleanly", but submitting any of these coins for grading would be a waste of money, toning or no.) Edit to add: I've pulled coins out of old folders that were toned much like this. I do believe it happens naturally, but they aren't sought-after like "naturally" toned MS specimens.
@-jeffB is 100% correct. I disassembled a 1960 Whitman Mercury dime book not long ago. Most all the dimes exhibited almost identical toning..... Old Whitman books are notorious for toning coins. Some pleasantly... Most unpleasantly.
A couple of those dollars approach what's happening in my silver eagles Dansco album............the fact of the mater is (is) that I purposely placed the eagles in that album, so I suppose you could say that the coins are 'un-naturally (artificially) toned.
If I placed them on a south facing window sill, or a garden fence (for three or four months) it would be natural.
Cleaned then put in the album where they toned. Not appealing at all. The cleaning hairlines are really obvious on the 23 d. I’d stay far away
