Are there any known 1971 40% silver halves known?

    why the 1974 D?

the 1971 makes sense: leftover planchets from 1970, and the 1977, left over from the special bi-centennial editions.

    but, 1974?

The 1974's were also struck in 1975 and that was when ALL of the silver bicentennial coins were struck.

Could it be possible that there are 1965 90% silver halves? 1965 silver dimes got created as the mint was still striking silver coins till '66 under the date 1964. A couple of blanks went to the wrong die and got 1965/66. Rumours exist of a 1967 silver dime, as 1966 was the last year for silver dimes. They were dated 1964. In 1970, only proofs were minted. Only a veeeeeeery lucky blank would be going to 1971.:hatch:

Yes it might be possible. In 1965 the Denver mint struck both 90% and 40% silver halves.
