A question for all experts out there. I have been wondering, are slabs easily opened? For the purpose of switching a lower grade coin. I have already found this to be a problem with gov. issued proof sets. Any, and all advice is appreciated!!! CLAW
Yeah i'm gonna have to know about this one, i've just bought a slabbed coin and i'm going to have to crack it out when i get it so that i can get the coin in the cabinet.
I cracked open a first generation PCGS holder one time and it was quite a job. I had to use a vise, a hacksaw, a large utility knife, a flathead screwdriver, and a great deal of care and patience. I got the coin out of the holder without damaging it, but I don't think I'll be doing it again any time soon.
Most HAVE to be BUSTED open with such items as a screwdriver and hammer except for the new SGS slabs which have an "easy open" slot on each side that simply requires inserting a screwdriver and twisting just enough to pop it open where it can then be easily closed again. Every other slab I have ever tried to open required damaging beyond repair so it is important to be very careful to keep from damaging the coin inside. Proof sets open very easily and can be put back together with replacement coins as easily as they were opened. Most of you top grading services slabs cannot be opened without force and will not be useable after you are done.
No they cannot be opened easily and the coin switched. Slabs from NGC, PCGS, ANACS and ICG are all sonically sealed. What that means is that the 2 plastic halves of the slab are actually melted together by using sound waves to melt the plastic. Once sealed the slabs are tamper proof. They cannot be opened without destroying the slab or altering it in such a way that is not readily visible.
Thats what i did not want to hear. I recently have been purchasing MS-68 pcgs graded golden dollars, and from looking at them their not 68, maybe 67. Although,I am no expert at grading coins ,I am pretty close ,within a grade or too. So they just might be MS-68. But with my recent purchases from KELLY,s coins,I am extremely doubtfull that ,they are 68.( I am not up with technology, as far as digital cams or scanners) As you can read under the thread (counterfeits????),I also purchased the 1998 and the 2000 Chinese Lunar Scallops from this company. I opened up the plastic on the Dragon only to find a line on the side. With this in mind, I have made several attempts to contact Kellys, and have had no reply. Funny thing is, my 15 day return policy has expired. With, as I had thought, that Kellys was a reputable dealer. I will make every attempt to voice my opinion that they are very shady!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It,s too bad for the other reputable dealers that I will no longer buy online.Nor will my collecting habits be the same.Since, I will onlybuy from the U.S. mint.Though I have had my problems with them too! It is a bad thing for this hobby that there are soooooooooo many shady businesses, and people out there, just waiting to take advantage of collecters. Many people are satisfied with purchases they make. But I wonder if they too are taken advantage of and just dont know it.(being sold a lower grade coin for the higher price.Since, in most cases the higher grade coin is multiples in price.) And unless u are the expert, or are just happy with the deals u make, then u will continuously be bent over. Just another way too make a buck, I guess. So "to each his own". What ever makes u happy. As far as me, i will probably never buy any thing again.Except the new stuff from the mint.. Feel free to leave an opinion THANKS CLAW
Well I stand to correct myself. I had read the thread from Crystal, and mistook the sgs for pcgs. Now I feel really dumb for my thread after this. All I can say is that my opinion is still the same with Kellys. For their customer service is terrible.Even if the MS68's are really 68's. So, I would like to thank Crystal and JD*****( the moderator),and all the others willing to help out us NON-EXPERTS.(I cannot quite call my self a newbie, so that will have to do!!!!) (non expert) CLAW
I'm a bit confused - did you buy these slabbed coins from Kelly's ? Even of you did - Kelly's had nothing to do with the grade of the coin - that was assigned by PCGS. Just wanting to make sure you realize the difference - these coins were not slabbed. The plastic holders these coins come in are easily opened and reclosed without anyone being the wiser. Would you post a link to the the Kelly's you are talking about. I am just curious to see if you mean the same dealer I know of. Well if you're talking about slabbed coins, the person selling the coin has nothing to do with it as the grade is assigned by the grading company. With raw coins you are quite correct.
Sorry for any missundertanding on my part . But i still think Kellys is somewhat shady ( The 2000 chinese dragon scalloped lunar with a line on the side) Their disregard to reply back about a refund , since the 15 days are up.
Well I'm sorry but they have to do what they say and I would have to side with them...if the 15 days are over and you didn't try to return them int he 15 days then its yours and you can't do anything about it.... Speedy
Thats not completly true, by just posting these comments claw has most likely costed them a few sales.
Claw - the reason I asked you to post a link to the Kelly's that you used is because there is more than one of them. In the interest of fairness - I wanted to know which one it was.
Hello A companies failure to reply at all to it's costumers, regardless of return policy, is at least a sign of poor costumer service. I would also like to know the link. I have purchased some coin's from www.kelleyscoins.com/. I had no problems. Just got some SBA's. James
Im sorry i don't know how to post a link. The link above is the one I used. I guess im happy with my sac collection. It is the poor customer service that really ticks me off. I had several days to return the dragon. That is why I had called and left numerous messages.Still no reply. I know this is mine now. So, the question is, will I shop Kelly's again???????? Well they are the only place to find MS-68 pcgs sacs that I have found. And i would like to complete that collection. I will never buy anything from them unless it is slabbed!! Sorry for any mis-understanding BUT THEIR COSTOMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE, THAT IS A FACT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And as far as recommending them , ONLY FOR THEIR GRADED ITEMS!!!! thanks CLAW
Maybe I was wrong...you called before the days were up?? If so then I would side with you...if you called after the number of days were up...then I would say too bad.... Speedy
If so, that is on their part. I spent all day tring to get ahold of them ,only to recieve a message each time. In my message , i said i have a few questions about a previous order and some questions about a new oreder. If they had any brain at all, they would have contacted me.(and who knows, maybe all the lunar scallops come in that condition, my bad for buying chinese minted products and my bad for buying the "unknown", which in reality is all my fault) I checked my phone log 18 calls at long distance prices, That was more than a week ago. Still no reply. So if they lost any new customers or, sales,so be it im glad. I just hope this does'nt happen to any one else Oh ,and by the way, I was going to ask if this was common to have this on the scallops.Or if they were counterfeit. Next time they should take the time to help out their customer base. I had just placed two orders totalling about 600 dollars. If im the new guy on the block , and not worth getting a reply, then their not worth my business!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Claw - I don't blame you about being upset for not getting a reply - that certainly doesn't sound like the Kelley's I know. But consider this - maybe the reason you are not getting a reply is because they are on vacation - it is summertime. Either way - you may rest a little easier once you hear this - there is no time limit, for any dealer, for returning counterfeit coins. You can return a counterfeit 10, 20 yrs after you buy it. As long as you have the receipt and can demonstrate that the coin is indeed counterfeit - the dealer cannot refuse to accept the return and refund your money. That's the law. So now - what you need to do is take the coin to a dealer and get his opinion on the coin. So far all you have is the opinions of others from a coin forum that are based on your verbal descriptions of the coin. Somebody needs to see the coin in person to determine if it is counterfeit. And I assure you - if it is - you CAN get your money back.
Well that is interesting. I learn something new every day. I took the dragon to my two local dealers on Monday. And surprising enough, they have never seen one. One suggested that they all might look like that. Im not convinced it is counterfeit, but i guess I'll always be unsure. As far as them being on vacation, well I never thought of that. But i wonder how many more days or years ,will it take, for them to make a simple reply????????? I thank you , once again for your knowledge. It really must be tough, knowing everything, and responding to all our questions and threads. That is probably why they call you the moderator. Keep up the good work. CLAW
