Are rare close/wide AMs considered varieties or errors?

Cool to see you comment! So you believe they are ultimately die varieties? I can't wrap my head around it because the wide AM die on, say, a 1999 cent, is normal in all ways except being paired to the wrong obverse and not getting the proof treatment.
