I think as being a coin collector and Knowledgeable one I am more very strict than TPG, First I do not Trust TPG to certified my rare or valuable coins without supervising them, Second, I rather keep my rare coins/valuable coin raw rather than slabbed them so that way I am more happy to touched it and look for it. The reason I let them to certified my coins is only for authentication purposes but I am watching them closely. If I have Ten of Uncirculated 1893 S Morgan silver Dollar do I need to ship this coin for certification? Of Course Not! This kind of coins is very valuable one too. If they wanted to certified it the table must be clean and the hand of the person will going to certified it is also clean..be also aware of switching coins. Now if you wanted your coin slabbed by TPG it is up to your own decission. Just only be carefull if your coins is very valuable or have a Sentimental value on it. IMHO. got 2c?

Morgandude11 As long as it's Silver, I'm listening

Let me ask an honest question: Who here would buy a Morgan 1893s raw, with no concerns? Given that there are so many altered coins out there (mint marks added and removed), and really good fakes, does not the security of a TPG justify itself on high end coins as virtually pro forma, so as to avoid getting ripped off? I just used the Morgan as an example--feel free to comment on the philosophy of buying high end unslabbed coins.

Well, The problem there the 1893S morgan silver raw is NOT for Sale that's is why No needed of TPG Services...Got it! Now if this 1893s For Sales It is responsibility of the serious buyer to get his own authentication services. This kind of negosation between the BUYER and SELLER when it comes to a serious Money involved.

Oh I forgot I also love PCGS because I remember one of their member at PCGS forum email me that JAY PARINO 1913 Liberty nickel will not reach Two million US Dollar and he is right just 2 Bids and the auction ended for 1.8 Million. Jay do not make any money on it! then later on that coin sold for 5 Million $ they are really smart.:thumb::thumb:

Your point is quite valid, and I would be the last person in the world to disagree. But that really has nothing to do with the discussion at hand.

The question is not whether or not the TPGs provide a valuable service, there is no doubt in my mind that they do. The question is have the TPGs loosened their grading standards ?

If I collected them, and I had a dealer I trusted I would. Let's put it this way, the whole game is about trust. To simplify let's only consider dealer to collector sales here, the grading companies are selling a service based on the premise that they are more trustworthy then dealers. For me, in the series I collect and with a handful of dealers, I trust the dealer more then the TPG. On the other hand, there are other dealers I trust less then the TPGs. But it is a case by case personal decision and is very specific to the dealer.

I am not saying this is all the TPG do, there are dealer to dealer sales where the TPGs are trying to reduce transaction costs by making coins fungible, and there are collector to collector transactions where they may add a lot of value.

Loosened, yes. And I would extend that to say they are not consistent follow a universal set of standards.
