I hate novelty coins, but I'd be absolutely powerless to resist that.

It'll never happen, though, because they'd never be able to figure out where to put the "obverse" and "reverse" elements as required by law.

Why? No matter where the put them they would be on the correct side.

I must have missed that. I didn't realize it was going to be a rounded coin like the Baseball commemorative. It worked well for the Baseball commemorative. However, for this coin, a concave/convex surface is only going to make an ugly image uglier. Now I see why the boot imprint would make for a good candidate.

Cartoonish is a good way to put it. I was very disappointed when I saw this design. Is the mint trying to capture sales from children? Many of these designs look childish.

My dad bought several silver medals of the Apollo Missions from the Danbury Mint. I haven't looked at them for a long time. When I get a chance, I will post some photos.

I just don't care for any of the designs of the concave surface. As someone who loves the space program I was hoping for something special with this coin and I don't think that's what it will be. Oh well.

Are the designers of these strange coins with even stranger images trying to tell us something?

    :)

These are photos of my dad's silver medal collection of the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Missions. These medals were produced by the Danbury Mint. These coins have been in storage for quite some time, so you will see some toning. My photography isn't great. Since these are "proof" medals, you will see some reflections in the fields.

Those are really neat. I can't help but point out that the first two medals are in the wrong slots though. The Alan Shepard should be under Mercury 3 and the Grissom medal should be under Mercury 4.

At this point I guess we can wonder what's happened to the U.S. mint the last roughly 20 years, when the 1988 America in Space medals looked better imo.

Don't blame me! I was not even in existence when those missions took place.:):):) Just joking! I will post the remaining images.

I think the Danbury Mint did a nice job with these medals.

I was hoping that the Apollo 14 one would include a golf club...oh well. :D

I have been a space nut since the earliest days of the program, so I too was looking forward to this release. What a MAJOR disappointment; they just COULDN'T get it right! :stop:
Those are AWESOME! Thanks so much for sharing.

That's funny. At first, I wasn't sure what you meant about the golf club. But there's a video of Alan Shepard on PGA website:

    http://www.pga.com/news/golf-buzz/feb-6-1971-alan-shepard-plays-golf-moon

For the longest time, I thought there was only a single moon landing until the film Apollo 13 came out. There were six altogether. One of my lab mates from (communist) Hungary swears that the moon landings were a hoax.:astronaut:

With regards to the medals, the image for the Mercury IV mission looks much better in hand than in the photo. The exhaust from the rocket looks spectacular on the coin!

I'm not a huge modern mint product guy and I think generally they just seem to try and sell whatever they can...quality doesn't seem to be important. So, I don't know why I hoped this would be any different. Maybe being a space nut just took over.

There were 2 manned lunar orbital missions (Apollo 8, 10), 6 manned lunar landing missions (Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17), and 1 failed manned lunar landing that because a lunar flyby (Apollo 13). So, in all total 9 manned missions to the moon.

Likely so. I, on the other hand, do like a lot of the Mint's products, but then, I'm a very modest collector of a very limited assortment and/or variety of modern U.S. coinage, so their stuff just happens to be right up my alley.
