I've been waiting for APMEX to release these and they finally did. Being a die-hard MSU Spartan (actual alumnus, not just some guy who likes the logo) I was waiting and waiting ready to pull the trigger on a boat load of these. I mean, a round I like is much better than a round with some copycat artwork from a classic coin or some bullion company's logo. What a disappointment. $60 an ounce. I really think billion collecting is jumping the shark. From Perth's constant high priced releases to the U.S. mint's latest $150 release, those minting this stuff know the market is ripe to exploit. Makes me want to sit on the sidelines until they all tire collectors out just like sports cards and comics have in the past.
A stacker would never buy one, but what's $60 to a collector who only needs one or two. Why would you want more than a few?
I don't get it, is the round going to be truly collectible so as to justify any sort of markup at all? I agree with the poster above me, though, and if you love the coin/round and want it for your collection, why not?
If someone is already paying through the nose for an education from a teacher who reads verbatim out of the very book they wrote for the class in order to profit on the side from the required reading then they might also be willing to pay twice the spot price for silver.
You do know that if one happens upon such a teacher, they are free to make their own conclusions independently about whatever that teacher is saying. Silly, son. Very silly.
http://www.apmex.com/Category/1492/Collegiate_Silver_Rounds.aspx They don't even say "1 oz. .999" on them. ...and where's my Eastern Michigan University round?!? Just kidding.
I saw these on there a few months ago and they were ALL sold out. I bet some generic online fraternity site bought them all up and are selling them for even more. At $60 though, I do wish they had a Duke round to complement my fraternity brass coin I picked up on feebay a few years ago.
I agree that it would have been preferable to put the weight and purity stamp on them. But the price isn't too high if you consider them a gift item.
I am sure there is an additional licensing fee associated with producing the collegiate rounds. The Collegiate Licensing Group (CLC) is the biggest but MSU may use a different company.
Even at spot that would be the deal breaker for me. The only thing I buy that doesn't have weight and purity is 90% US pre 65 and a few mint sets mad with 90%
I am as well. There are a-holes in every realm, including teaching. Let's not be ridiculous though. You sounded like a paranoid conspiracy theorist. Believe me, the last person an intelligent being has to fear is some underpaid teaching lackey. If you can't see past that as a college aged kid, you deserve being brainwashed.
Considering I graduated from college over 8 years ago I will take this with a grain of salt. I don't really care what it sounds like. My point was that the fact that these rounds are overpriced is rather fitting. This is off topic so I am not going to respond further. My apologies to the thread for bringing it up.
If people are buying them how are they overpriced? The mark up is less than most things you buy at a store.
