I am not a collector of the ancients, but enjoy two auction sites and see a good amount of variety on both. Great collections and property room. Thought I'd share them even tho it's not eBay I like them both very much and have gotten great deals from both on gold pieces
Surprised no one has mentioned Frascatius (Tom Mann, twin cities area eBay collector-seller). Maybe like me, who hesitated to avoid the extra competition! He's been around 20 or 25 years. Just received this from him (a rare Phalanna AE w BC tag):
Am I allowed to say that I have been selling ancient coins on eBay using the not very good screen name “MORTOWN” since 1999? Over 10,000 sales, around 6,500 positives no negatives.
Yeah, I have a friend from the ancient coin club who is one of the world's experts in coins of Alexander the Great. He is writing the section on him for an important ancient coin website, (cannot remember the name). Anyway, he scours Ebay daily and has picked up loads of unknown, unpublished bronzes from Ebay over the years, and a few drachms. The sheer volume and breadth of issues makes coins of Alexander an entire universe in itself if you have the knowledge of all of the variations. I also know of unique and horribly rare Central Asian issues being picked up there and published on ONS Journal regularly. Point is if you REALLY have specialized knowledge its doable, but short of that untold dangers of the fakes if you are unsure.
Yes I am MORTOWN and MORTOWN is me - a bad name which I am afraid to change since it has a rep, at least I hope it does. At one point when ebay was an auction site, I was selling over 25 lots a week, I was buying all my coins from the best supplier in the world, and having a blast. Over the years the lack of policing fakes on ebay as well as a steep drop in interest in ancient coins (although you would not know from the prices on the big auctions on Numisbids, Biddr and Sixbid) as least on ebay - perhaps related to the lack of policing, the end of the flood of coins from eastern Europe, have made ebay a much more difficult environment generally and more difficult to sell. But, as I have said before it is the only place where you are still able to find - maybe twice a year, used to be more often - truly insane deals as a result of having knowledge. But I truly love this hobby - every aspect of it - history, the coins of all types, I love handling the coins I am selling - I have focused more on Greek bronzes because the seller's lots I get require me to attribute them and that is truly much more fun than simply photographing them and putting them up.
I RECOMMEND JAZcoins on VCoins. Never had a disappointment and he knows his ancients and often reduces the prices. Great guy! Jim
