Looks like we're going to have over 1000 responses to the survey. We're at 914 already, and counting.
I think the poll on the economics of coin exchange will be interesting, but like the effects on the secondary market associated with a possible auto company failure, I would like to see a similar poll directed to such as 1. Will you continue, increase, or decrease spending on coin magazines, newspapers, CDN, and memberships such as CONECA, ANA, etc.? 1a. If publications were to become entirely online, would you continue to subscribe? 2. If you use TPG services, will you continue to do so less, more, same? 2a. Would you switch services from one you normally use if prices stay the same? 3. Will you take place in auctions same, less, more? 4. Will you continue to buy supplies same, less ,more? I think that the collectible market for the lower , middle range of collectors has contracted already. Many do not realize how or if the associated areas are going to be affected. I feel that this economy is just beginning its problem. Here in my county with near 25% unemployment, the "trickle down effect" has become a flood with many chain and non-chain stores closing or reducing offerings and service. The ones begging have even started walking between lines of cars at a stoplight to ask for assistance. I have never seen that here in our rural area. Best of luck to all, I surely count my blessing, even with big losses to my retirement nest egg. Jim
Since I completed my Lincoln Cent collection I have narrowed down my remaining collecting solely to a type coin collection. As everyone knows, no matter what you collect, you eventually acquire many duplicates or otherwise unneeded pieces. That's my position now and I would happily sell any duplicate that I have. I don't need the resultant income to live on and would use it exclusively to fund and upgrade what I have now or acquire what I don't have.
Over the last few months I have sold quite a bit of stuff. Complete BU sets of Jefferson,Roosevelt,Washington,Kennedy,Ike, SBA. Having held these for so many years I did OK. Kept the Franklin and Peace sets along with Mint and Proof sets because of low offers. I view it as generating cash to work on upgrading Lincolns.
