Postage stamps never expire. I almost always use “vintage modern” stamps in my mailings. i acquire them at auctions and estate sales. The last batch I won, I was high bidder at $25.00. It had $105.45 worth of postage stamps in it.

I’m sad I missed out on both of those auctions. I need to pay more attention. What sites were they listed on?

After missing out on the Etruscus antoninianus I ended up buying one anyway today from a dealer in Switzerland, EF condition. I'll show it when it arrives.

True, but its an antiquated concept. Often the postage amount exceeds the surface area of the envelope. And of course now everyone expects a tracking number. Its fun, but one wont see it too much longer. Stamps are a dead collectible, and their use even more so.

By the time I got to the list there was nothing left. Sounds like there were a few gems in there. His listings are always fun to read. As Doug said every coin is a learning experience. I have a few coins up at Forum auctions right now that I've already learned from and now want others to learn about :D

You can say the same thing about coins. Were they to wise up about pretending there is a use for cents and nickels other than sales taxes and that sales taxes need to be collected from the buyer rather than the seller, we could stop making them now. Few people collect coins that ever served at face value but prefer special issues or even special types including things that were once circulating coins but no longer serve in that capacity (denarii, pre-1933 gold, large cents).

There are US stamps that have been demonetized and could no longer be stuck, legally, to envelopes to pay postage if someone were stupid enough to do so. Pre Civil War stamps were made worthless to prevent funding the Confederacy with the stocks of US stamps in all those southern post offices. The largest were 90 cents and that was a lot of money in 1861. Today they go for over $1k.

I used to collect old stamps (used only) but all were pre-1961. My favorites were on envelopes. I had a hard time deciding between hobbies but coins won.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I collected stamps just like I do coins favoring the hot messes. I had no mint state, full gum receipts for services not rendered.

I feel that when I am collecting ancient coins I am actually collecting history.. we all feel that way... that's the thrill for me (us!). I know nothing about stamps but I would assume many feel the same way for them... so when cash and mailings are all digital what will be left? We will all be ancient collectors.... so we're kind of ahead of the curve! :woot:

Well, the envelope came today, six days after the auction, over the great green ocean. There were seven coins (and that nice book, inscribed by the author!). For five I was too late. About 15 dollars for each coin.

I just put them in my old scanner. The two Roman bronzes are very mediocre, but so far I only had a Postumus sestertius that's worse. The portrait of Severus is not too bad. It's from Serdica, Moushmov 4777, rev. city name in a wreath.

Of the four Elymais coins, to the right, I didn't have coin 4 and 7. And naturally, that clipped Theodosius siliqua is a nice piece, too, for 15-20 dollars. So - nice surprise. (There were 15 stamps on the envelope, mostly flowers).

Nice coins for the price @Pellinore - I'm delighted with the couple of coins I got. And the stamps are simply amazing. Makes me want to get into philatelics.

I'm giving all my stamped envelopes to a coin collector with a secret liking for stamps. (First he said it was for his daughter, but it turned out otherwise...).

Sort of related, I missed out on two nice looking cash coins in Franks Vietnamese collection. One lucky bidder nabbed all 300+ lots for a meager $11,500.

    I’m happy for Frank though.

Sorry for the awful pics. I'll be reshooting these.
Upon opening the package the first thing I saw was this fantastic patina and deeply struck reverse:
