    Do you think they randomly picked 1801? How did they come up with that date (being that it was 90 years off)? Some other folks have posted that maybe it was play money - I don't think that's the case. Was it a "token" paying homage to the original coin? What purpose does this coin serve?

    It's just a fantasy piece, a novelty meant for collectors. There are some people that actively collect modern fantasy pieces knowing exactly what they are. And why not? There is a wide variety and they are highly affordable. Using non-existent years/rulers/denominations separates them from counterfeits.
