Thanks Doug, I didn't know that that many of them were still known. (You will note that the location of only 8 of the 10 engraved pieces in known. One is listed as unknown and one only reported as having been seen.) I still think they make a good candidate for being whatever the person who made the Wikipedia entry was talking about. Right year, right mint, and a special coin and close to the right number. Anyone got a better candidate?
No. I can only remember that back in 2001 when I was doing research for a WINS trivia question regarding Proof coins made in Denver I ran across the reference I mentioned about 4 Proofs having been struck in Denver. I can't even recall for sure if it was Morgans, but I distinctly remember the number being 4. I've gone thru about 5 computers since then, and one of those crashed, taking with it everything I had not already backed up. I've searched and searched and cannot find the reference again. But I can recall it was from an obscure but reliable source. And it had something to do with the earliest days of the Denver mint - before it actually went into operation. It was one of those things where you are searching for one thing and find something else entirely different but related because of the search words you use. Over the years I have stumbled across more valuable information like that, by accident, than I ever have on purpose. So I tend to remember it. But that's about all I can say - I remember it, but cannot refer to it to prove it :headbang:
