The Legal 1933 is said to be King Farouk although this is disputed. I seem to recall that part of the reason it is legal is because a export permit was issued at some point.

As far as I know none of the 1933 double eagles or the 1964 D dollars were ever shown to the Congressional committies, nor would there have been any reason to do so. These were not new proposed designs or compositions so there would be no reason for the committee to examine them. It's not like they show the new years issue of coins to the committee each year. "Here are next years coins, look just like last years. The committee sees coins/patterns when there are proposals for a change. There were no changes in the 1933 double eagle or the 1964 D Peace dollar.

Sounds like either made-up or someone just got the story wrong and he picked it up.

Charles Hoskins met a DC area coin dealer away from our office (I don't recall the year or if he was the Director of ANACS or INSAB at the time) where he was shown a 1964-D Peace dollar. Because of what it was, he wanted nothing to do with it and would not issue a certificate of authenticity. The dealer may still be alive so I will not name him.

Is it possible that he didn't look carefully at the coin and it was a fake ?
