He died about 15 years ago and his wife, the aunt, left the collection at the bottom of her closet. Eventually she found out I was into coins and let me look at it. Had a shop look through it and make a buy offer. I had convinced myself it was going to be out of my price range, so maybe I could pick out a few coins and sell the rest to the shop on her behalf. The offer was certainly fair, but not as high as I expected. Talked to the wife and decided to buy the whole thing. The aunt was relieved to keep it in the family and not get ripped off. She gave it to me for the shop&#039;s offer, minus 50 bucks for my time!!! It was great being able to get a collection that hadn&#039;t been touched in 50 years at a wholesale price. And before I get any flack, I went back to the shop and paid them for their trouble since they spent time pricing a collection that I bought.
