I have got lucky a few times.....I just recently bought a Good Condition 1909-S Lincoln Wheat Cent and upon closer look it turned out to be a 1909 S VDB......Spent $65.00 and sold it for $500.00....Heres the pics....
Here's another coin i just bought....Its a 1863 Civil War Penny "Not One Cent"....Not sure of what variety this is so if someone could help me than would be great.....The lucky part about this buy is that upon closer look there a distinct Double Die on the "T" in "Not" and a double "N" in "one"....Tell me what you think......
I have gotten lucky a lot since I officially declared myself a "professional" amateur treasure hunter. The trick is - allowing yourself to take some risk (and not feel too bad if you lose a few!). Keep hunting! (just not where I'm hunting!) I bought a bag of "sterling silver jewelry" at a GSA auction. I assume it all came from TSA metal detecting. The bag weighed just over a pound and I paid about $150 for it, so I already had won figuring there was probably some fake stuff in it. There was an antique Chanel ring inside that was worth about $400 and there was a Mouawad 18k white gold diamond necklace in it that I sold for $400 (not sterling - but looked it!). The rest of the silver is just stashed away. I bought a lot of Barber halves that were listed in "good condition" and was able to get the 1905-P graded as Uncirculated/details. That was a $700 win. I actually just came across a large stamp collection and my hunch was right - it has a 1980 Gengshen Golden Monkey stamp in mint condition. Valued at ~$1800. This is the second stamp collection I've found one in. Actually I've found 5, 3 were fakes and I destroyed them. I bought a jar of "junk foreign coins" at an auction last year. They were labeled Polish or Czeckoslovakian or something. I paid $20 plus fees - so roughly $25. This was in the jar. 1879-S 10 Markkaa gold coin. Valued at ~$350
Your Civil War Patriotic is a 90/364a and is an R-1 in copper . You must remember these were made on the cheap so doubling and other errors are quite common , still a very nice CWT .
I've done a lot of cherry picking. Bought many scarcer die varieties as well as mBought plenty of ms coins as au. Cracked a cleaned reverse details seated dime out I couldn't see any cleaning on and it came back ms 65 bought a 21 peace I thought au for $70 came back 63. Is all a game with grading companies
That type of thing usually involves someone listing a BIN by mistake or with a lack of knowledge. I got this coin for $9.99 with free shipping. The seller accidentally listed their starting bid as a Buy It Now and sent it anyhow.
I got lucky once in a Antique Store here in town, the woman running the store did not know what she had for coins and by "coins", I mean the only coin she had in her store at the time.... that coin was a BU 1909 (P) Lincoln VDB Penny that I bought for $10.00
Could you weigh the Lafayette Dollar ? Might as well weigh them both as they're both highly counterfeited .
There should be die cracks and die polish marks on the reverse . I can't see them on yours . This is mine and you should see them on the reverse .
I will when I get them. They both very well could be fake. I'm protected on the money part. At $25 a piece I had to see for myself. If they are indeed fake. I may donate them to the cause.
