Forgive my ignorance, but what are hammered coins? I assume you are not talking about what my friends and I did as young kids, hammering pennies on the sidewalk until they were 3 inches in diameter and as thin as a piece of paper.
Dreamer94,a hammered coin is one that was struck by the old craft method of placing a planchet on a die mounted into an anvil, then placing another die on top of the planchet & striking it with a hammer. Aidan.
dreamer94 Slightly more sophisticated than you did it as a kid LOL except they hammerd blank discs into a coin rather than a coin into a blank disc Not realy Aidan not been looking for any, been concentrating on other things :thumb: quite a good read in the site below http://www.colchestertreasurehunting.co.uk/C/coinhistory.htm
I used to collect a lot of machine struck coins earlier.. but now, I'm a big fan of hammered coins of South India and Portuguese India. Got a bit of collection too.. The South Indian coins are pretty cheap and have not yet been catalogued seriously. But, there are some fantastic coins..
There's more truth to your comment than you realize. Most hammered coins were thin, extremely thin. Some were so thin in fact that they could only be struck on one side - the other side was completely blank. Even the "thick" hammered coins could be easily bent in your hands.

They would be very hard to take on most early hammered coins. That's how thin.5 sheets of paper is about average.
Jerome, can you please post some photos of your hammered coins, especially those from England,Ireland,& Scotland? Aidan.
Mark,King Edward I's coins are THE most common English hammered coins that are available. You can buy a really nice one for under NZ$70. Aidan.
I have many pictures of hammered coins but afraid I have none of the edges. Here is one of my favorites - 1583 Rose Noble
Doug, that's a lovely hammered gold coin.I can almost swear that is an English coin by looking at the arrangement of the Coat-of-Arms. Aidan.
