Bear in mind that Franklin halves aren't my strong suit.

    I waver between XF45 and AU50. Guess I'll go AU50.

I think you might be able to go mint state on this one. '63

I'll climb on the back of @Paddy54's parade float. I see I was initially too low but still just don't see a Mint State coin here.

    Nice, sure. MS, no.

Slide me up to Choice AU, then.

Not mint state nevertheless a nice coin and again the color and bell lines are sweet.

If it were my coin a short bath as it's a nice specimen for a Dansco album.
I have a complete set of MS Franklin half's ,some with varieties 3 short on completing the proof set. I moved mine from holders to a Dansco.
I do love the series but unless perfect and full bell lines no values.
I was working a show about a year ago a gentleman walked in with a complete MS set in a nice capital holder.
Out of 25 dealers not one was interested in making an offer.
He asked me why? I said they don't want them to begin with ,and they don't want to insult you with an offer that would be around melt.

Just an humble opine.......the hair looks quite good, something that I based my observation upon. I see strands of hair.......something I sometimes don't see on proof examples.

Mine neither, but always looking to learn. Every so often you have to stick your neck out to get your head chopped off...........:)

My initial gut instinct says AU. A very nice and clean AU. Had it been MS, it would be a very, very nice MS.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

This has the classic look of a high end AU - 55 is what I'd call it.

As for the strike, remember that 1948 was the very first year for these. The details are usually quite strong because the master hadn't yet begun to deteriorate (strikes from the late 50's are awful because the master had worn down).

Thanks for the replies. I've always been torn between AU and MS myself, but I've resigned myself to consider it AU.

Which is exactly what I did by being the first to respond to a grading thread about a coin from a series which is one of my weaker ones! LOL :p

If my ms set looked as good as this one coin looks in Au. I would be very happy with the set . That said an Au set as such would to me be very desirable compared to ms set that grades vary up and down.

That's one of the reasons I like to chime in early on these 'guess the grade' things.......I don't want to be influenced by other folks answers, and, if I'm wrong, who cares? It was my call and I learned something.......:)
