I stumbled across these in the past days of researching and honestly I really like the look these (probably because I actually own a bird haha). I was way amped to pick some up and then find out the crazy premium on them! These coins are selling for anywhere between $6-$12 over spot! Wondering if theres anyone here who collects them or has any and what you think of the premium? Is it worth the extra couple dollars? Do your local shops actually buy them back for more of a premium compared to the Silver Eagle or Maple Leafs? Any info / insight would once again be much appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks! Sorry about the repost of a similar question, I don't know how I missed that one when I searched for the coin earlier.
Hmm that's a tough one. I suppose not THAT much over spot but I'd probably be willing to pay $25, just don't know how the resale of them are like anywhere outside of ebay... :/
I collect the series. I was able to get the 1996 this summer to complete the set (well at least make it up to date). The premiums do hurt a little and no dealers will not pay that high of a premium to buy them from you. However, the series is definitely fun to collect but there's no good album out there to put them in. I guess it's up to you. Do you want to spend the money and collect the series or is there another series you'd rather put the money into.
Here's what APMEX are asking for 2010 & Prior years and from Provident Metals. The big 10 oz Kooks are pretty neat looking. Check Gainesville Coins as well. I've used all three companies and had good experiences with their customer service.
It is worth it to shop around for Kookaburras because some of the ones that I have seen have very high premiums on them. I have seen some 1-oz Kookaburras cost as high as $30 but if you look around online and maybe locally, then you might be able to find some for an ok premium over spot.
Hi, I do collect 1 and 2oz Kooks and have bought all of them from ebay only when they are being auctioned off, No buy it now purchases. My last purchase was the Kookaburra 2002 Palindrome privy mark issue which is a set of 4 2oz coins in a beautiful case with the book price of about $500 and I was able to win it at $225 which was a steal. When I go on ebay I put in silver proofs and look for the auctions that are ending the soonest and use a set price over spot for all of my silver purchases and have made out very well in auctions that the buy it now price is 2 to 3 times the winning amount. Thanks Randy
I really REALLY regret not picking some of these up when I was in Australia. I saw and admired them at the post office every time I went in...
hmmm, one of the local coin dealers had some maybe I will check back this week and see if he wants to sell them or keep them in his display case for another week or two
Sadly I've tried bidding on a few on ebay but seriously refuse paying THAT high of a premium. I called around 5 local dealers and found a few that sold them for only $3 over spot ! I think this may be one of the first times in my life that I found something out in stores that sells cheaper than ebay!
If you like Kooks and can buy them at $3 over spot, you should jump on it. I have a few Kooks and I buy them because I like them for what they are, not as bullion. When I buy bullion, I buy ASEs or Canadian Maples. As for premiums on Kooks, certainly compare prices and don't overpay but unless you plan to resell sometime soon, don't worry so much about the premium.
