I'm looking at this 1831 CBH, and it seems like there is a misplaced date in the denticles. I can find no info about anything regarding MPD's on this coin. I would really like to know if my guess is correct, or could this be PMD? There does look like some pmd in the area, but I just can't tell. These are the seller's photos, so it's all I can do as far as image quality. Thanks for looking, and for your opinions. Edited to a pic with a white background, then I goofed, and had to edit again. SMH...
Did you have a look at those web site? http://bustieguide.com/overton.php?d=1831 http://maibockaddict.com/1831-capped-bust-half-dollars.shtml If you don't find a matching description it's likely PMD...
@micbraun - I went through the PCGS website of 1831's, and went through each Overton there, looking for the anomoly in the denticles below the date, but didn't see anything. The sites you referred seem to also be Overton attributions, is that correct?
That's correct. There may be more details in the Overton books though. I'd recommend you first figure out which O variety it is. If you also post a picture of the reverse, we may be able to help you...
There are three or four Overtons for this year which might be a match for the misaligned date; so far, I kind of like O-109 for it. None of the 1831's mention the feature below the date seen here, leading me to think it a planchet or possibly postmint issue.
I'm pretty convinced of it as O-109. On this variety, the two of the three vertical stripes in the first set on the left of the shield are joined except at the very top, and I think I can see that here. I checked a few other examples of this one at Heritage, and none of them show what yours does under the date.
I had gotten as far as lining up the T and I, and then looked at the date area of those listed with the -2. I totally agree about O-109. I wish I could see the coin in hand to really get a look at that date area, but I'd have to buy it, which I'm not sure I want to do. Does the coin look dipped to you guys? And what grade would you say? I'm around VF35.
Not a VF. It looks like a higher grade coin, somewhere in the XF45-AU53 range. If the seller is asking VF money, then you're likely right about the possible cleaning. If I had to assign a grade, I'd say AU det - cleaned.
I think so. In these images, the surfaces are too "even" for a coin that was minted almost 200 years ago and survived the foul atmosphere if the Industrial Revolution. 1831 is too "easy" an issue for a Details example to be sufficiently liquid for me to buy just to find out what's below the date.
O-109, detailed coin, PMD under the date. Nice coin with some meat on it, if you can get it cheap. I wouldn't pay retail for this one though. Far to common of a coin.
