"You can please some of the people some of the time, most of the people most of the time but not all the people all the time" or something like that (Abe Lincoln). Let's face it, grading can be very subjective. Most of us would all like to see our coins get top grades but is not going to happen all the time. Each of the top four TPG's have grading standards and each are prone to making mistakes from time to time. We are not perfect and neither are they. And we are not all going to have the same experience with customer service at the TPG's, in a grocery store or a big box chain store. If you think you were slighted on a grade then it is your choice to send in to another company to have re-graded. Bashing any one of them, instead of just telling your story does not help in any way. Instead, use every way you can to find out what went wrong and try to get it corrected. If you are not pleased with the results, then simply switch to another company.
I'd try to be careful about what you say about grading companies. I was part of a group called RCC - Rec Coin Collecting at what use to be usenet (basically an old message board dating back to 1981) and now is owned by Google (now known as Google Groups). Well this event happen to a few of the guys in that group, giving a lot of negative opinions about a now defunct coin grading company. Well the company tried suing these guy for defaming them and this case went on for about a year and cost all those guys thousands of dollars. Of course this group had a lot of issues that ended up in court. But anyways guys be careful.
You can have opinions, I don't think they can sue for that (right?). They are a second tier company so I think they may grade conservatively to try and become more reputable. I had a coin graded once at a show. Supposedly I got 10 or 20 percent off but it still cost me almost 50 dollars to grade a world coin. I'll never do that again. If I was to grade another coin, I'd go with ngc. If Anacs is second tier, I think their prices should more reflect that
The legal landscape is a lot different than when Alan Hagar filed suit over disparaging comments made against ACG. Many jurisdictions have AntiSLAPP laws, see (but don't trust them for legal advise http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_lawsuit_against_public_participation). If somebody were stupid enough to file a lawsuit today, there are resources that would jump at the change to continue to clarify 1st Amendment law. I haven't used them to grade coins, but the whole subject of TPG grading is really more than a knee jerk X is great and Y sucks. I certainly own ANACS graded coins - I have one on my desk @ work as a smile piece (I smile every time I look at it). I've met several of the people who work for ANACS on the show circuit. In fact talked to Cindy on Friday at PNNA. They are all very nice people. I've emailed their customer service team on a couple issues regarding the database - again perfectly professional responses.
You are, of course, correct. Keep it simple, to the point and with only facts. There's no need to slam anyone or anything just to get a story across. it's not even so much about the 1st amendment as it is common decency. After you write it, read it three times to make sure your anger was vented before you hit the post key.
the person that filed the lawsuits is now in the sticker business. I wont mention the name as I don't want to promote the entity I am sure we will be reading a lot about the person in years to come , leopards don't change there spots. My view is : Coins I want to resell in the near term need to be in PCGS slabs the market is very clear they will pay more and the coins are often far more liquid. ANACS is a good company but not of the level they were in the small slab days the market simply punishes many ANACS coins. Many great coins are in those old white slabs. I am hopeful that ANACS gets there bearings and takes its place we need a real 3rd alternative that is a viable option based on the market. IGC has very little market acceptance though one can get some great deals if you take the time to look at there slabs they seem to be very consistent on the circulated material. They are very liberal on higher MS grades for a while they were a virtual MS70 factory for moderns and it really hurt them in the market place.
I used to submit fairly regularly in the small slab era, but not since then. Frankly, I don't much care for the ANACS slab itself as it is these days. For me, I don't often see a need to go to anyone but NGC. I like the slab, the service, the personable staff, and the ANA/PNG officialdom status. And I can get all that and not have to get bullion commentary from a guy that doesn't know how to wear anything but Hawaiian shirts.
I completely agree with this. I use NGC for all world coins and most US types except for a few that I think PCGS does better. ANACS prices aren't that great if you're not submitting for a special, and while it's nice to be able to see the label when the slab is in a case, their newer slabs aren't very attractive. There are some instances when you want to use ANACS over other TPGs, namely for varieties not otherwise recognized by other TPGs, to submit cheaper coins on specials, or when an AU55/58 Details might do better than an NGC/PCGS AU Details, but that's about it.
Truth is a defense to libel and slander. I've used them and had one problem they quickly resolved. If the big 2 grade the same error, I go to them.
Sure they can, you can sue for any thing/reason. Yep it is a defense, and it is a good one, but it can still end up costing you thousands or even tens of thousands of dollars to provide your defense and prove your innocence. If you get VERY luck the plaintiff may be directed to pay your legal fees, but theat doesn't happen too often. In the case mentioned earlier a lot of "small fry" were named in the suit and had to spend thousands for representation and they were eventually dropped from the suit and were out all their legal fees expenses. And that case never reach court where you could present your defense. tye small fry got dropped and the big boys paid them a settlement to make him go away.
I don't mind the newer Anacs slabs they are by far the easiest ones to crack open so the coins will fit in my dansco. Unless they are the little white ones then they are in the slab to stay while in my possesion.
