Any thoughts on why they bagged my toned nickels?

Absolutely. Toning and its changes are entirely dependant on storage methods and environment. They can occur gradually over a long period of time, or very quickly over a short period of time.

Not even close to the same results. TPG slabs are in no way airtight nor do they contain anything to inhibit toning. The IS holder does.

It is very wise to check on them periodically. I would say at the least every 2 to 3 months, if not more. Dramatic changes in toning on coins stored in safety deposit boxes have been documented.

I suspect it is a liquid trail left on the coin from the toning process used or in rinsing the same.

    Thanks, Doug.
I sold a Buffalo nickel through Teletrade recently and in their photo, there appeared to be some subtle toning I had not noticed when I purchased it. It certainly made me wonder whether it was there when I purchased it a few years ago. (Also could have been TT's photos, which are hardly the best.)
