But Tom Reynolds is a great guy for early copper as well. Actually it is neither one, it is a die CRACK. I'm also an early copper fan but one who has pretty much reached a dead end on the US stuff. I just need the S-1 to have all the chain cents, I can't afford to collect the rest of the 93's. I have about 30 or so of the 59 varieties of 1794. My 95 and 96 caps are complete (No S-79 which is a pattern or S-80 which is not a mint issue.) I'm down to just 3 draped bust cents 1796 S-96, 1801 S-217, and 1803 S-264. And my classic heads are complete. So I had to switch overseas to keep up my copper craving. Conder tokens. Copper, large cent sized, and affordable in better condition. I've got about 780 pieces now.
I sort of collect old Copper coins. I say sort of since every time I get one it goes into a 2x2 and then into a long red box. I usually wait until I get hundreds of the same thing prior to even attempting to start an album. Half Cents and Large Cents are difficult to make into a collection due to availability. I only buy from coin shows and flea markets so what ever they have is what I usually get and only if a decent price. No idea of how many old Copper Cents I have or what they are.
I don't know that Tom. Does he have a website? I do know "of" Shawn Yancy but I've never conversed with him and as was said, his prices are "reasonable" but they are still more than I'll pay since I'm such a cheapskate. Ribbit
Yes Tom Reynolds has a website http://www.earlycoppers.com/ The coins on his website are mostly better pieces, high rarity, and CC coins, but he does have a fair stock of lower grade/more affordable material with him when he sets up at shows. As a person Tom is just one swell fellow. I don't think there is anyone who has met him who doesn't like him. Tom is a 1798 collector and he has one of if not the finest collections of the varieties of 1798 cent. Complete including the two NC varieties. He had part of it on display at his table at the EAC convention in St Louis last year. Absolutely incredible.
Who doesn't love old coppers! Right now I am fooling around with Rosa Americana pieces, does Bath metal count as copper?
I figure it will take me several years to complete my 1798's alone. There are so many of them. :goofer: Other than 1806 (one variety - S-270), I don't have a single year completed yet but I'm getting there: 1796 - 0 of 28 1797 - 0 of 24 1798 - 9 of 44 (plus 2 doubles) 1799 - 0 of 2 1800 - 6 of 23 1801 - 8 of 12 (plus 3 doubles) 1802 - 11 of 18 (plus 3 doubles) 1803 - 10 of 23 (plus 2 doubles) 1804 - 0 of 1 1805 - 0 of 3 1806 - 1 of 1 1807 - 3 of 6 I haven't managed to pick up a 1796 or 1797 yet. I keep on getting outbid on them. Once I get more of the colonials I'm looking to pick up, then I will start bidding more and will finally start picking up some 96's & 97's. Ribbit
