any ideas what this is? some of the characters look japanese or chinese. the other side is more of a mystery. at least to me.

Show sharper photo. It has too many characteristics of a counterfeit. If it turns out to look better in the photo, I'll see if I can ID it for you.

 

a magnet doesn't stick, but a neodymium #52 magnet doesn't slide down it slowly either. so i guess it's not silver.

 

Looks like a counterfeit of a China, Kirin Tael. See if it weighs about 35 grams.

Not an expert with coins, but yeah, that looks like Chinese, Japanese looks different.
