Before I spend hours trying to identify this coin, I thought maybe someone in this thread could help much faster. Any help would be appreciated. I was not sure which side was up, so hopefully the pictures are going the right way. 4.2 grams 23 to 24 mm
Not exactly a match but somewhat close as to what it could possibly be. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces88257.html Edit: Numista search results for Islamic gold. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/in...&u=&f=&g=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&te=y&cat=y
I'm not convinced it's Islamic. I could be way off base but the writing doesn't look like Islamic script to me. I might not know what I'm talking about but I think you should keep your options open if you can't find it. It could be something from Asia like the Indian states.
It looks like a Fatimid Dinar of Abdullah al-Mahdi Billah or Abu Muhammad Abdallah al-Mahdi Billah https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces72545.html
It's a medieval Islamic gold dinar, for sure. I'll go with @willieboyd2's assessment above. Nice historical coin. These were the trade standard of their era, so they traveled all over the place, and have even been found way up north in Viking hoards.
Agree with the Fatimid attribution by WillieBoyd2. But instead of al-Qayrawan as in his linked specimen, the mintname here reads "al-Muhammadiya".
