Hello everyone! I went to the LCS today and found this small golden colored coin in their sixpence box. Usually I am pretty good at telling what countries coins may come from (especially with European coinage) but this one had both me and the owner of the shop stumped. While I'm 96% sure it is Austrian I don't know what it possibly could be, especially since it has no markings or denomination inscriptions. LCS owner let me have it for free because it did not test as gold. It has the same design on both sides. Thanks! -Chris
I agree it is quite similar to some gaming tokens of the period. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Imperial...n-Gaming-Mini-Token-Marker-Coin-/252956804546 https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces110941.html
looks German> I have this one that's a 10 Pfennig with the same reverse. I can't find it so here's some I found on the web. Again, I don't specialize in world silver, and this coin could lead you to a dead end. I'm surprised LCS even sold this to you. Germany 1888 20 Pfennig Obverse: Inscription and "20" Denom. Reverse: Eagle surrounded in branches in the middle of a wreath Com.: Silver [FT_RHT] Germany 5 Pfennig----this has the relevant eagle just look up 5 Pfennig. Heres a similar eagle design.
I think Austria is more likely than Germany because it's a double-headed eagle. There are actually a bunch of European countries that use a very similar eagle though - half of Eastern Europe does. Definitely not a coin either way. Some type of token.
Maybe a gaming token inspired by the Austrian 20 corona gold coin? Similar double-headed eagle, but the real ones are 21 mm. (Image not mine) https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces28374.html
Yep, that is the eagle. The German one is single-headed and does not have the imperial insignia ... Christian
