Well I went to 7 different Orlando area coin shops. Two were absolutely horrendous, dark, scary, NO inventory, smoky, scary biker dudes running the places; they were obviously fronts for some sort of money laundering operation, as I had more pocket change than these "coins shops" had coins for sale. (the stores were related to one another).

Next place was mostly a low-end junk / jewelry store, but with some coins. Mostly bullion, junk silver. It was funny because the guy agreed to bring out all the slabbed coins he had when I asked but 70% of them were NGC problem coins that were < $200, the rest were common date Peace and Morgans. Funny, as that was the high-end stuff under lock and key. The guy was nice enough and sold my wife a cheap ring, so it worked out.

Next place was more of a antique store but with some raw common date Peace, Morgan, Franklins, and bullion. Nothing there for me, but my son did like the swords and daggers they had. My wife simply said "no."

Another store has plenty of inventory, nice people, and nice graded coins. I spent some time there and saw a nice CAC certified Pine Tree Shilling for $6000. Alas, they did not have a cheap CAC coin that I needed, but they did probably have 10 or so CAC coins for sale. You were locked out and locked in, and there was even a Sheriff in there, checking in and talking coins. This was the most professional place I saw, but it was still not the Coin Mecca I was expecting for such a large city. I visited some awesome comic books stores and CCG / gaming stores, which were great. Where are the great mega coin shops in Orlando?

Next store was 90% camera store and 10% coins, mostly raw stuff and some low end graded Morgans and Peace, along with some coins in strange basement slabs. This was another shop that kept all the graded coins in the safe out back and I had to ask to see them. The guys was very nice, but had to meet my wife and only stayed maybe 15 minutes. The guys gave me a GREAT tip on the way out, which was to head t down the road to a store called "Ancient Artifacts" which he said would be good for my wife, my sons, and me!

He was so right! A coin shop / rock shop / jewelry shop / artifact shop. We could have spent a lot more money and time there. My sons bought rocks and lose gems, and I held my first gold and silver ancient coins, including a very nice Owl. The guy and gal running the place were great with my wife , sons, mother, and me. I did not buy a coin but I was very tempted to buy my first ancient coin, raw even! Check this place out if you are near Orlando.

I also called AU Capital Management and talked with the owner very briefly. The internet told me they had a retail store, but I was told that is longer the case, if ever.

I ended up cheating and buying my "Orlando Coin" off eBay, so I can remember the trip with a special coin.

In summary, Orlando is lacking a major coin Mecca. Unless there is one, and I missed it.

Actually, NFC has fairly significant inventory that is regularly updated, both on their website and simultaneously listed on eBay. They always run lots of auctions and BIN listings, so be sure to compare between their site and eBay listings, for the best price. I check them out every so often myself as they carry a lot of things of interest. They advertise in the large coin publications like Coin World, too. I might have listed them at the beginning of this thread, but not having physically visited their store, a short ways out of Orlando, I couldn't tell you whether they were "great" or not ;), and having to defend the information I did post initially, was busy having my memory of them sidetracked.

I enjoyed your write up and your personal experience at various shops no doubt lends great help to this thread for others visiting the area. Congrats on your new coin pick up! It looks like a really smart coin and sounds like it fills a hole you were looking to fill. Perhaps all is well that ended well, by your visits to the stores eliminating where you couldn't get what you were after, and returning to seek it from an online source. I'm glad to hear you found it. Kind regards and my apologies for letting things go off course previously.

What were the names of the interlinked biker money laundering fronts?

That sure is a fine piece. Just don't primarily think of this topic when you remember your trip. ;)

I shall refrain from naming them, but believe me, I am not exaggerating. There cant be too many coin shop sister-stores in the greater Orlando area, so it would be easy to deduce. I will say this, when I accidently suggested that one of the other coins shops was related to one of the bad shops I wont name, they literally almost gagged. I was visiting so many of them, I got briefly confused and had said so-and-so shop sent me over.

I think it's good you went to all the shops and figured out where these places were on your own and had many first hand experiences, even the ones that were questionable and which are to remain unnamed. That leaves some mystery out there for those who are willing to experience life in all its grit and Reality. Recommendations are good, but they can only get you so far, just as opinions bear bias and vary from one person to another.

Fact is that almost anywhere one goes in the world, places have a range of life and characters to meet and interact with, and not just the shiny Disney World fantasy foisted on kids and their parents desperate to provide happy memories to them, with it's slew of mono-emotional bright characters. There's also the grown-ups retro Mad Men wet-dream some folks probably still succumb to thinking that only good things lay awaiting them in "Action Center U.S.A." (see video).

No doubt there's a lot of beauty and decent life there and indeed throughout Florida, I've been several times and to several cities and enjoyed my stays, but we can't realistically expect every town and it's coin shops or dealers to meet expectations even when proffered recommendations, just as life always comes with bumps and unexpected surprises.

Sure the winters are mild and the living is easy by some comparison, but they seldom advertise hurricanes until you need to evacuate or wish to spotlight the long history of drugs problems in the state when enticing people to come visit or relocate. There's always bound to be something objectionable to someone. Anyways... I'm glad you had a good trip and got a piece you were after!

  11. Were any of the sketchy places listed in the ANA directory? If so, they may want to know.

No. I just doubled checked. The two best places I went both are.

    Might explain it.
