Here's a short video about Antoninus Pius, the fourth of the "Five Good Emperors" (and not the third as he was mistakenly called in the video). (The five good emperors in order: Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius.) guy
Spectacular coin AJ. I also really enjoyed the write-up. Thanks for posting. Just from the perspective of portrait style, Antoninvs Pivs is one of my favorite Roman Imperials. There's just something classic about his bearded visage that appeals to me. I've attached my humble example, obviously not in the same league as your Aureus, but I liked the toning. I suspect this coin re-toned in modern times as I found it in an old coin shop stuffed in a "Par Avion" airmail envelope dated 1958. Antoninus Pius; 142-144 AD Silver Denarius; 18mm/2.6g OBV: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP Bust Laureate, Facing Right REV: TR POT COS III; Pax Standing Left holding olive branch and cornucopia (RIC 51a)
Yes that sounds like the postal service to me! Its probably just arrived, following a short delay at customs....
I like the first sestertius Eduard...patina a bit battered and scraped, but a very nice coin. What is the reverse??
Hi Yoc, yes I know my example is a bit battered, but in better preserved coins you can see Pius sitting on a platform with Liberalitas standing in from of him and an official standing behind him. On steps to platform a citizen receiving a donation from the emperor. The Liberalitas type also exists for Hadrian, Trajan, Verus and Commodus as far as I know.
Hello together, I am new in this forum being pretty impressed by the coins that are uploaded and introduced here. Further I love to debate about high-quality ancient coins and thus, I decided to commit to the discussions. For almost thirty years, I am collecting ancient focusing on bronzes as my nickname suggests. One of my most favorite bronzes is a Pius sestertius I purchased at the NAC sale in spring. Although the reverse is quite common and Pius sestertii in a more perfect shape definitely exist, I love this coin because of the portrait style depicting a bearded, middle-aged statesman.
Welcome. Nice sestertius. Which of the two sets represent the actual coloring? I suspect the second. Regardless, very nice detail.
Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your beautiful sestertius! Your images show much more "character" to the coin than NAC's - it looks like it is indeed very beautiful in hand. I have only a few sestertii, as I've worked to acquire some tougher types first (Colosseum sestertius/Port of Ostia) but there are an incredible number of appealing, aesthetic sestertii. Aurei and denarii are great but there isn't anything quite like holding a heavy sestertius in your hand! I'm sure you've seen it but this upcoming NAC sale of the JDL collection has an impressive group of sestertii. Prices are sure to be strong but many of the coins are gorgeous. Some other members have extensive bronze collections as well. I hope you post a thread of your other coins soon!
Dear Joe, over time, I will show you also other precious bronzes. Long story, it is not because of the photo. The coin looks now pretty different compared to the status I received it since I gently cleaned the item. It definitely happens that the appearance of bronzes improve when putting them in acetone. Is there already a thread about those jewels?
Welcome, Marc Aceton ... wow, those are certainly a couple of super sweet coins (congrats => and I can't wait to see more of your wares, my new coin-friend) Cheers
