Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am attributing the last coins I won, at least time flies faster until Thursday when hopefully they arrive The auction house (they are usually correct) attributed it as Claudius II (Gothicus) AD 268-270. Siscia Billon Antoninianus 20 mm., 3,22 g. After studying the pictures, I think it is RIC V Claudius Gothicus 52 http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.5.cg.52 .... but the mint is specified as Rome. Why Siscia? is there any way of telling? I am not mainly interested in late 3rd century, but I bought this coin because I don't have another Claudius Gothicus and fills a gap.
Yes, the mint is Rome; as for the way of figuring it out, we can only look at the portrait style, since in this time period mintmarks were still uncommon. This is the coin's page on RIC V Online: http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/262?t...erence=&page=1&hpp=5&mod=result&from=advanced
Not sure why they mentioned Siscia as I cannot even find this coin type minted in Siscia. Usually they are quite OK with descriptions, they don't mention the RIC numbers or confirm the reverse types/legends, which is great fun for me as I love attributing them myself.
