Antimachus II 174-165BC Rare Bronze Double The Indo greek empire was an independent greek empire which formed in north western Pakistan and Bactria (Afghanistan). They had major cities at taxila, sirkap (Sialkot) and in the gandharan regions. Having many kings, they little to no written records, so all we know about them is mostly from their coinage. Antimachus II was one king who is only known from two types of coins, this square bronze unit and a silver drachm. The coin features a palm leaf next to a wreath with a kharoshti legend staying the title of the king "maharajasa jayadharasa Antimakhasa" The other side depicts a greek aegis, a type of shield with the head of a Gorgon usually associated with the goddess Athena. A greek legend naming the king surrounds the aegis. "basileos nikepheros Antimachus" or "victorious king, Antimachus". Whats interesting in this coin is the butterfly like aegis with a gorgon head in the middle, it also looks like a web almost.
