Yes, I couldn't help myself. Actually, this is an upgrade to one I already have, and upon closer scrutiny I think my other example may be a Legio XV and not Legio XVI.
    Marcus Antonius Leg XVI 2.jpg
    AR Denarius
OBVERSE: ANT AVG III VIR R P C, Praetorian galley, thyrsos behind prow
REVERSE: LEG XVI, eagle between standards
    Patrae 32-31 BC
    3.63g, 19mm
    Cr544/31, Syd 1236, RSC 48

    You compare:

I believe @Alegandron has a Legio XVI and most probably others as well. It's not exactly rare. There were 24 found in the Delos Hoard of 1905. In comparison there were only 4 XVIII LYBICAE and 40 of Leg II found in that hoard.

The new one is the kind of coin that those of us who don't know one legion from another might appreciate. Upgrading the worst coin in a set actually upgrades the whole set. Good work.

Are you kidding me? "YAWN" another Legio??? No way! I have been rootin' for your Legio collection all along! I really enjoy your posts! Good stuff.

When things start moving in the right direction again, this is an area that I would like to flesh out. Like @Bing , I want them ALL!

Wow that's a beauty Bing! These types always make me wish the coiners were a little more careful about lining the dies up on the flan.

Nice coin Bing. I think your right about the other being LEG XV.

I just figure everyone's kinda gettin' bored with my MA Legionary obsession.

Yep, I remember yours. Very nice!

Yeah, me too. But I suppose these travelling mints were knocking 'em out as fast as they could go.

I think you're correct, so it makes me doubly happy to have the new example.

    And that's the truth!

JW, I can help you out finding / making that IIII Legio Denarius!!!

Yeah, I can definitely "nail" one for you!

Very nice "upgrade", though I also agree that the worn prior coin is an XV, the apparent I just being the staff of the standard. I can't share as I don't own any, probably because you've been energetically hoarding them all! :)

The old one is definitely XV. A shame you’ll now have to do yet another upgrade, Bing, since we all know how much you hate having to buy these legionary denarii. :troll::D

I makes no difference whether I am getting bored with your obsession. The one that bothers me is I may be getting bored with some of MY obsessions. I hope YOU are still having fun with these coins. A couple of the things I am seeking are so unlikely to turn up (like the LEG IIII) that I might miss them if I saw them. I tell people that my #1 want list items are things I did not know existed. That is a bit of a lie. Roger Bickford-Smith owned a Syrian mint coin of Septimius Severus that was with 100% certainty overstruck on a denarius of Pescennius Niger. When he died, it went to the British Museum. I have overstruck denarii but none have that Pescennius with no doubt undertype. When I am looking for my coin, I am also watching for a LEG IIII. I see enough MA legionaries that I can hope I will find one with that number. Yours exists. Does mine? I can hope, at least, to find something I did not know exists.

Great coin, Bing! I will never get bored with your MA Legs Collection.
Well, I really can’t see here an upgrade, because IMO, the former is definitively a XV.
