You have entirely missed the point. Auctions are usually not a risky source to buy precious metals. However its crap like this that makes it harder to buy pm's locally. This stuff INFILTRATES the local market. Do you not know what that word means? This kind of stuff is like a virus. I want to buy my PM's locally thank you. The POINT is, that if we can stop this crap, then it makes auctions and other local trading places SAFER. Your solution just totally ignores the problem. It seems like every bit of advice you give basically states "ignore the problem". I don't know what kind of candyland you live in, but this stuff is getting worse, and worse and worse.
It's going to make things worse. At most auctions, things are in a case, they are not going to let some Joe handle bars of silver/gold. So if you bid on a troy ounce of silver for $28, get home, and find out it's fake, how would YOU feel? There is absolutely no need for this kind of crap.
The first laws ever made were based on morality and some still stand to this day: Stealing is 'wrong.' Why? Because it is unethical. What is 'unethical'? unethical adjective immoral, wrong, improper, illegal, dirty, unfair, shady (informal), dishonest, unscrupulous, under-the-table, unprofessional, disreputable, underhand, unprincipled, dishonourable, not cricket (informal) --http://www.thefreedictionary.com/unethical So it shall be against the law of our land. Let us call this infringement on our law 'illegal'. Morality is the sense of right and wrong... how can you assert laws are not based on and framed with morality?
Laws are only there to enforce morality, by force, as well as to compensate those who are 'wronged.' Just answer this, please: Do you believe that production and sale of these items will ultimately benefit, detract from, or have no effect on the future of non-regulated bullion trading? Zero, nil, nada. As ignorant as I feel the average American is, they are mostly smarter than that. Now, unmarked replica coins could definitely be a problem.
They will have no effect on the future of non-regulated bullion trading. In the grand scheme of things, is this the biggest problem that has to be solved? I also don't care whether these things continue to be sold or not. I buy my bullion from reputable, trusted dealers, not from ebay or Johnny Two Fingers' car trunk. I check for water before diving into the pool.
Seriously? This is the best you can come up with? Then do so.. no one is stopping you. Considering that you are one of the "educated", use this to your benefit. "We"? Its not my job to make an auction safer... talk to the auction company or auctioneer. As for local trading, let me ask you this: for what reason are you trying to buy metals? If to hold long term, simply buy from a reputable seller. There is no reason to take a chance when metals are easily obtainable, even on your "local market". On the other hand, if you are buying to resell, welcome to the real world since this is all part of the game. Risk goes hand-in-hand with profit potential, and that is the chance you take. While I am not sure what kind of candyland you live in, the fact is the rest of the world is a tough place and life is hard. If such things are so overwhelming that you cannot manage, maybe its time to find something else to do. Everyone else who buys privately and/or searches for a deal must assume the risk in doing so... why are you any different?
Why don't you start a thread about good samaritan laws and argue the morality of them there? It has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.
