Ya, I saw yours posted a few seconds before mine did, so I didn't get a chance to read it yet. My bad.
Charlietig, I said both sides to keep specific member comments such as the last page or so to zero. I did not say any thing about discussing the tokens ( the Metallic ones) pro or con. And I stand by what I said! The other "him" and "us" will do also.
These appear very weakly struck centrally. Not attractive at all, IMO. Lady Liberty and that eagle are so weak they're fading away like Michael J. Fox's polaroid in Back to the Future. Lol. But to each his own. If you like it, you enjoy. Collect what you like and flip what you don't!
Thing about it is, the 13 owners of this coin will think it looks great and that's all that matters, isn't it? It won't matter what others think.
Thanks j. I just happen to know more than most about Carr items and how the market operates in regards to them so I can safely say what I do with confidence. It's not about some fanaticism, although I am a fan obviously, it's more about educating those interested or unfamiliar with his works and their market potential. And FWIW, out of the dozens of pieces I own I think I've sold 2 and only because I had doubles. But boy even that felt a little like cutting off a finger though lol
I'm not going to read the pros and cons on just another Carr thread. This is all I'll say for what it's worth: 1. I like most of Mr. Carr's stuff. 2. Apparently, he is not breaking the law. 3. I cannot wait to see his next project. 4. I don't like defacing stuff with "copy." 5. I've bought some of Carr's items in the aftermarket. Many above issue price. 6. Finally, an artist can do/make whatever they wish and in the numbers they wish; however, producing an extremely limited number of items (unless the dies broke) for whatever the reason ("jack" the desirability/value?)... Well, let's just say it may not be the best way to grow a business and satisfy loyal customers. As for me , I should have struck 200 pieces , announced only 13 pieces and then sold my stash to the lucky suckers who cannot live without one over time at lofty prices! Fortunately, my very limited dealings with Mr. Carr have been excellent and he is a much more honorable man than I.
I actually feel the opposite. The lower mintages help protect the future value and over minting and immediate value loss is one of the major complaints that customers have about orders from the US mint.
I agree. And he puts out enough low mintage things that everyone has a shot at getting lucky and logging in at the right time
How do we actually KNOW that though? Is there a buddy or a preferred customer out there who gets a heads up in advance ? @Cascade got in on one of the 13 didnt he? Hmmmmmmmmm smells fishy
Exactly. As soon as something gets some massive mintage no one cares anymore. Part of the fun is getting something hard to get Some people check it daily even a few times a day. That doesn't even get into the fact you can get updates when a webpage is updated.
They get a heads-up when something valuable is about to appear. Clearly, @dcarr is one of Them. I knew it! Never mind all the stuff about "initials" and "signing his work" -- I'm going to go back over everything I've bought with a microscope looking for the Eye in the Pyramid...
I get no "heads up", Dan does not operate that way. It was posted on the CU forum and I pounced. I just happened to check the forum at the right time. I actually had an hour long meeting before that and I checked the forum after. If the meeting hadn't been moved up a half hour early I would have lost out. The best and only way I know of to get a low mintage or very quick sellout item, aside regular refreshing of the DC website, is to check the forums and Carr threads regularly. Someone always posts new listings, after they order. Actually, the other night something similar happened. I noticed he had made 1 of the 1/10 oz gold owls available again. I'm not sure how long it was available but I bet it wasn't too long and I pounced. Was really regretting not picking one up when they were originally listed but didn't have the extra cash at the time... Carr gold is starting to take hold
I have not bought anything directly from the Mint in a decade; however in my experience, the common new issues virtually always sell for a profit very soon after they come out and then they drop. The special issues always sell for more and to the best of my knowledge hardly ever sell below issue price. That said, IMO 13 items from a very collectible and popular artist with the huge following Mr. Carr has should not be called a low mintage issue. I prefer to call it a SCAM. Nevertheless, my opinion means nothing. As I wrote above, it's a free country and Mr. Carr can do as he pleases. It's just a shame to me that such a beautiful and relevant issue to the anniversary of that design will not reach more of us.
Satin. I like the look of his satin gold pieces over the PL ones on most issues so it worked out. I'm probably I'm the minority there though
