Although I have a Tetradrachm of Marcus, as Caesar, I didn't have a denarius. Got this a few months prior but just now getting around to sharing it. Marcus Aurelius, as Caesar (139-161 A.D.) AR Denarius O: AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS, bare head right. R: PIETAS AVG, sacrificial implements: knife, sprinkler, ewer, lituus and simpulum. Rome Mint 140-144 A.D. 3.3g 20mm RIC 424a[pius], RSC 451, BMCRE IV (A. Pius) 277, SRCV II 4786 Scarce
Nice job @Mat ! I always love the Sacrifical Implements... Great centering on front and back. I am a little surprised that I have his Caesar Denarius also, but this one is AFTER your Sacrificial Implements and getting ready to pour the sacrifice on the altar... RI MARCUS AURELIUS AR Den as Caesar TR POT VI COS II - Genius stg at altar hldg standard
Nice one, Mat. I Like it - it has a nice portrait. M.A denarii as caesar are relatively scarce. I also find his portrait styles in his denarii as caesar more interesting than his more mature, aged portraits as emperor. This is my only denarius of Marcus Aurelius as caesar. Same reverse motif as Alegandron's, but with a draped bust.
One of my collecting goals is to fill in some missing "major" Emperors. I have no illusions of getting a coin per emperor. But I think I need at least one coin of Marcus Aurelius. I hope to get a bronze As, or maybe sestertius if I can afford one. But that youthful denarius portrait of MA is nice.
Nice one, Mat! He's so young in that portrait. I'd love to get an Antoninus Pius denarius with young Marcus Aurelius reverse (Doug's would do nicely ). Meanwhile, the only Caesar portrait I have of him is provincial: EGYPT, Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius as Caesar AE obol, 20.5 mm, 6.0 gm. Alexandria. Year 15 (CE 151/2) Obv: MAVPHΛICKAICAP; bust right, bare head Rev: Sphinx crouched right; LIE (date) above in left field Ref: Emmett 1919.15, R5; Dattari 3221; RPC IV online 15684
This is not the one she wants. There are many of these and this one is fourree. Perhaps this is better? I'm not sure the die work on Marcus is all that great but the Pius portrait is definitely better than on the fourree. I do not own a sestertius of the double portrait type but there are some nice ones. The larger format shows young Marcus well but my Caesar sestertius is not attractive enough to benefit from the size.
That's a nice lookin' MA caesar denarius, with a cool implements reverse @Mat Not only am I under Piused, I'm also under Aureliused. I only have two! Here is a rough but interesting provincial I've never been able to figure out. Unknown Roman provincial of Marcus Aurelius 22mm, 4.6 g, 161-180 AD
