The pictures here (and on the other thread regarding 2 supposed mintmark varieties) are clear enough in my eyes (as well as others, including variety and error experts that have been in the hobby for decades) to make an opinion based on observation and previously acquired knowledge on the subject. While it is true that sometimes things can be seen in-hand that cannot be seen in the pictures, I am commenting on what I can see (the mechanical doubling on the profile of the face), which does not have any distinctive resemblance to a doubled die variety. I believe they are called books. I would recommend investing in a few. (But alas, I could not sell them to you. :) ) Anyways, to get back to the specific coin at hand: the reason you are not seeing any doubling under the nose is because of the direction of the mechanical doubling. The doubling seems prevalent where there is more or less a part of the profile facing directly west...that is the direction of the doubling. While there are a few cases of multi-directional doubling, mechanical doubling usually is in a single direction. Since the underside of the nose does not face west (the direction of doubling), I don't think you would see doubling underneath it (at least that is my theory).[/QUOTE]
