stunning results pish! i got the coin in an mixed lot with some other stuff that i wanted, so it was kind of a "freebie". i did try some mild cleaning and used some verdi-care...but it didn't do a thing. after seeing pish's amazing results in another thread, i decided to send to her...i knew she could clean it correctly (i didn't trust myself). when the deposits are that heavy, obscuring details, i'm almost always for removing them if it can be done. i wasn't sure what would be under the green stuff, but it turns out it was decent looking coin.
I think this coin of Alexander the Great is thought to be a silver drachm. It has the forehead of Pegasus down on the left field of reverse, before Zeus. I'm hesitating to clean it. What would you advise me ?
Charles, it is hard to say without being able to see the coin in hand. I am not sure from the photos whether the coin is encrusted or just heavily toned. My method would not work on it. Perhaps soak in distilled water for a few weeks and see what brushes off, then reassess.
There are many bronze coins of Alexander that are the same size and design as the drachms so don't assume it is silver and drop it in lemon juice.
