I've been very, very slowly going through the many half dimes I bought and put away 30+ years ago and I've posted a few of them recently. I came across this one this morning, an 1846 plain: I did a quick search and didn't find another one shown in this forum so I thought I'd take a pic and post it.
1846 is a wicked tough date in this series. I am sorry to say this, but the date does not look right on that one. There should not be a crosslet on the 4. I have my doubts that it is genuine.
I'm not sure what you mean, every one I see has the crosslet. I actually found a couple PCGS graded ones that look like a perfect die match to mine. Check out this ebay example, item no. 133142025201
I looked at some slabbed examples the date on yours is an exact match. I have no doubt it’s genuine. A ngc g-4 sold for $1110 recently. It had a similar look though I’d call yours g-6
The PCGS website shows pix of four 1846 HalfDimes they have certified. All of those have a crosslet 4. See https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1846-h10c/images/4336
I thought the date looked crude, but in comparing it with known genuine coins it is a match. I'm envious it is one of the four pieces I still need for my set. 46, 65, 66, and 67.
