For 25 cents, I believe whomever sold it made a terrible "oops". But hey, that's what fleamarket is, isn't it, when people can't quite tell what is real gold or nickel copper.

I still stand on the view that it is indeed a genuine 5 ruble. Just a last double chec,k Jim - can you describe what the edge design is? :)

If it checks in for weight and dimension, then it's gold.....and that's all that counts really in relation to the item in question (for that particular date anyway).

    Doug,
I think I found what causes this effect. The denticles on this coin type, rather than being square peg or trapezoids like on most coins, are shaped like ski slopes, curving slightly from the edge of the coin to the tip.
This causes light to reflect off of them in two places so as you move from center the edges appear skewed.
You can see another phenomena caused by this curved shape if you look at the top denticles on the large sideways closeup. It looks like there are two distinct rows of denticles because the top and bottom of the slope catch the light. Then look at how they dont line up but are staggered like bricks.Mystery solved.
As for the live and learn,You've probably forgotten more than most of us will learn, thanks!

Yup - 4th edition. They have the AGW correct, but the wrong total weight. Chalk another one up for Krause :(

I did my best to scan the edge, it looks kinda Aztec? Anyway, just for the record this was not a coin dealer at a flea market pickup. The guy that had this in his junk box was selling war medals, Wings, that tpype of stuff, just had an old cigar box with a bunch of odds and ends in it. This happened to one of a few coins in the box. Along with several German WWII era coins that I grabbed as well. Thanks for all the input.. It certainly has been a conversation piece! :)

You've definately got a genuine 5 ruble there Jim M. I'm too sure of it.

To add to the novelty of it, there are three different varities of it. If I am not mistaken, if you looked at the edge right above the Tsar Nicholai II's head, you should be able to see the mintmaster A.G.. :)

    Well done Jim!

For those who want to get a hold of a basic, affordable and standard Russian catalogue, I strongly recommand the book written by Uzdenikov called Russian coins, 1700-1917. It is in dual language, Russian and English and has about 700 pages in it. It is one of the most basic and yet useful catalogue ever made.

I looked above the head. See something that looks like a Diamond. Now at the 5:00 posisition on the coin rim I see something that looks like A and an upside down L. Thanks again for all of your help GX.
