About 2 months ago my favorite local dealer got something in His shop that I never had seen before.....A one pound Morgan commemorative silver round. At first this thing was pretty impressive to hold, being a pound and all, but then I started noticing a few things about it.....no .999 or any other designation, no mintage, and the fact that it was a pound....who makes any form of bullion in pounds? My dealer was actually selling it on consignment for someone. He too thought that it was suspicious, and after getting permission from the owner He made a cut into it. Sure enough it was silver plated copper. The owner actually did not know it was a fake and was out of a lot of money. He said that He had bought it at a flea market. (who knows if that was true) So lo and behold one turns up on ebay...and the person selling it states that it has not been tested for purity, for that would "damage the holder," (is this joker for real?!?) and yet it still has some bids. This hustler knows darn well that these are fakes. My guess is that these things are coming in from China. Has anyone else seen these turds on ebay before? http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Giant-Silver-Proof-One-Pound-Morgan-Dollar-Coin-NR-/280563616189?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4152e509bd
Yes, I've seen this garbage before. Dale Earnhart 1 pound proofs. Silverish metal plated copper center. They still fetch $300+ on eBay. We have one we drilled a hole into, copper core.
Hopefully You did not pay that kind of money for that thing. I`m wondering how long and what other designs of these abominations are out there?
They were free to me. A pawn shop had bought these, then demanded-and received-their money back in full. The seller never claimed the junk. I was given a couple, including the drilled one. They're still worth $3 each, the copper value. These "silver" one pound proofs are all over eBay and all over the internet! Many, many people are getting ripped off! Look at how much they are selling for on eBay - and the buyers leave happy feedback! Many say "One Pound Proof" and some say .999 Silver.
Oh my! That bid is up to $255.....for plastic wrapped crap. That is sad for the person that gets burned...wish I could report the seller but he is playing the ebay game exactly right. Just a big shame is all.
I just saw one of these walk into the coin shop yesterday... BE CAREFUL the real ones say fine silver or .999 silver on the piece... always. Look like this poor feller is gonna get whizzed... and now that EBay has taken away our ability to warn potential buyers... they are going to let it happen.
