Another fake for you to ponder

    Not even a good fake color wrong details wrong the spikes and the denticles look wrong the second I saw it it didn't ring true. Bet it comes back in a bodybag

    Went to a bigger show today (big for my area anyway) and was so sad to see how many counterfeits there were in cases. The dealers themselves probably didn't even know.

    The date is also smaller than it should be on the fake, plus the shape of the 6 is wrong. Note the shape of the opening in the top curve of the 6.

    The thin spikes from the rim are rather well-defined, pretty much limiting the manufacturing process to striking with dies, and the stark contrast in definition between those well-defined spikes, and the poorly defined design details likely attests to the design having been transferred from another set of dies.

    What puzzles me is the cited differences between Miss Liberty's eyes. That difference has me wondering if a coin of a different year may have been used to transfer the design to the counterfeit obverse die. Entirely possible, as the non-dated side was used repeatedly in counterfeiting many dates in commonly faked series of coinage.

    I just haven't spent the time to find the answer to that question . . . at least not yet.
