eBay has another fake coin listed . . . https://www.ebay.com/itm/1893-O-5-H...178861?hash=item48d4c2c26d:g:Wq0AAOSwWnRdp9Kf I wrote the following to the seller, and am hoping he / she voluntarily removes the listing: This coin at first looked to me like a pretty convincing counterfeit. I had to dig a little deeper to make sure. After studying the real thing for a few minutes, I am positive it is not real. Moreover, the PCGS website states that 'The PCGS #21162013 is not a valid US coin number.'
You're right, although when entered correctly, I still get "The PCGS #21152013 is not a valid US coin number." - Mike
Curiously, it now comes up differently. I can’t explain that. As for the coin not looking right to me, I think I jumped the gun. I thought the dates on the subject coin and known genuine examples looked dissimilar. Closer examination has me backtracking. The lighting on the eBay coin makes the 93 in the date look wrong to me. I thought those two numerals looked uncharacteristically thin, but after looking at closeups of those digits, I can see that I am wrong. Live and learn.
I did, thanks. As for why I got the inexplicable message that "The PCGS #21152013 is not a valid US coin number", that is because I completely spaced it, accidentally using the Coin Number Lookup Tool for Cert Verification. I've use the Cert Verification tool too many times to count, and never even knew the Coin Number Lookup tool existed before tonight (I've always used Coinfacts or an old printed pop report to look up a coin PCGS number). I think I found the wrong tool because of the recent changes in the appearance of the PCGS website.
I am glad this turned out to be okay. I looked at it, couldn’t see anything wrong and thought that I must be slipping.
