That may have been me. I went in the pawn shop back in January. It was a Friday at 6 PM. Like others have said the "regulars" were nowhere to be seen and it was being run like almost any other pawn shop - except there were people there (myself included) that just came in to see the pawn shop they have seen on the show. And there was a "Pawn Stars" souvenir section of the store. (I bought a T-shirt.) Plus I picked up a few of Chumley's business cards. (The ones I got have a photo of him firing a blunderbuss.) There was no evidence of a film crew and if not for the souvenir section you would not know the show was the location of a TV show.

No, I was not impressed with the store. It was much smaller than it appears in the show. The selection of merchandise was unimpressive. The selection of coins was meager and the coins were primarily common, ordinary stuff that coin shops see every day.

I think that "reality show" is the newest oxy-moron in the English language!

Tell you what, although I have no interest in selling it. I might take that 1988 D reverse 89 down there and see what they figure would be a good pawn collerateral value.

I wonder how many coin shops have that much laying around?

Hobo, thank you. It ****ed me off when I heard minimal wear & MS63. That is not right but at the same time I'm like ya more money for the seller. LOL.

The following article shines some light on how the show Pawn Stars operates. On a future show I'm sure a Canadian guy will just "happen" to walk into the hock shop with a super rare 1880 $2 Newfoundland gold piece:

City jeweller to be on hit TV show 'Pawn Stars'

Your article says the guy knew beforehand what Rick was going to offer. What did I tell you guys before?

That is not the way I read that. He is saying that he knows how he operates - he offers about 1/2 retail for the item. And that is what he normally does for anything.

    My 2 cents

Pawn Star's has become a great success for the History Channel as Picker did.
But what I wonder is the cameras and being on TV making the sellers want there 15min of fame. and sell there coin or anything at 1/2 price offers???

    :D

That could be the most absured statment I have ever read on CT....of course the show is put together prior to filming but it is an actual pawn shop which actually operates like a normal pawn shop as far as buying and selling and paying owners for their menchandise. Rick and company certainly get paid for the episodes but I can guarantee the history channel isn't paying them and buying the collectibles for them that you can then walk into the shop and buy....please explain how that makes even a tiny bit of sense?

One thing you guys have to keep in mind when you hear that coin dealer mention "minimal wear" is that many of the people watching the show haven't the slightest idea what common numismatic terminology means. They have to "script" it so that John Q. can understand it, too.

I love it when they have old coins on there!! My wife and I are thinking of going there when we go to Vegas in the spring! Would definitely buy a coin from him for the right price!

Offer him 50% back of CDN and tell him you will have to make a profit when it comes time to sell. Better yet, submit it to NGC and have them add "PAWN STARS HOARD" to the insert. Then take it back to them and ask 10x what you paid for it.

Also keep in mind the TPGs will grade AU58's with minimal wear in MS-63 holders.
