AdamL Great contest. Got me to thinking (always a dangerous thing) Found that the prototype YB-52 rolled out of the assembly plant 11/29/1951, and its first test flight was 4/15/1952 (anybody notice that would be 57 years ago today). There were 3 A models delivered to the Air Force for testing in June of 1954. The first operational model, the B-520B, built in both bomber and reconnaissance versions, entered the Air Force operational inventory on 6/29/1955, when serial number 52-8711 was delivered to the 93rd Bomb Wing at Castle Air Force Base, California. Castle AFB is just outside Merced in California's central valley. I was stationed at Castle from 1966 to 1969 and got to see those big birds fly everyday. Even got to help clean one up that crashed on the runway. Trivia---What was the B-52's nickname? Answer BUFF (make up your own words)(the real version is not fit for this site)
